Are you looking for a rare opportunity to work in IT within the field of water research? Then you’ve come to the right place!
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

Cooperation between the worlds of science and IT is becoming increasingly important. We are therefore looking to fill the following new position in the IT department immediately or as soon as possible:

Your duties
Working as part of a small team, you will advise researchers on the procurement and development of custom software solutions in the area of research data management, as well as on their integration into research processes. You will independently develop web-based tools for data provision and data visualisation. When it comes to larger projects, you will support the development of scientific software by external providers. You will advise researchers on handling research data over their entire life cycle – from collection, to publication, through to archiving – and will provide corresponding support. You will participate in the design and development of the internal IT research infrastructure. In addition, you will help to develop and implement training and development courses in the field of research data management.
Your profile
To do well in this highly demanding role, you will need a university degree in the natural sciences, engineering, computer science or mathematics; alternatively, you will have been working in the field of computer science for some time and will have a qualification from a university of applied sciences. Research experience or experience with IT services in a scientific environment would be advantageous. In addition, you will have sound knowledge of at least one programming language commonly used in the research environment (e.g. Python, R or Julia) as well as common web and database technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL). You will work with Linux and will ideally have basic knowledge of Linux server administration. Ideally, you will already have some experience of the latest technologies and concepts that are relevant to research data management and open science, such as storage solutions, ELN/LIMS, data repositories, reproducible computing, etc. With a good command of German and a very good one of English (written and spoken), you will have no problems communicating with international employees.
Your personal skills
You are a quick learner with an analytical mind and a service mindset, and you are equally comfortable working on your own or as part of a team. You enjoy interacting with colleagues in other countries and identifying their needs, and you feel comfortable in an academic environment. You are an ambitious and highly motivated self-starter. You work in a target/solution-oriented way and can adapt quickly to changing situations.
We can offer you the opportunity to advance the areas of open science and open data at one of the world’s leading research institutes. You will be at the cutting edge of developments in the field of water research and will be in close contact with high-calibre figures from the research world. A modern workplace in Dübendorf, competitive employment terms and attractive training and development opportunities also await you. Eawag is an employer that puts its employees first. We promote equal treatment of women and men, and we support working families.
