Electronics / Mechatronics Technician (TE-MSC-TM-2021-86-LD)

Updated: almost 3 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 20 Aug 2021

Introduction

Join a team pushing the limits of accelerator-magnet test and measurement, to shape the future of CERN large accelerators. Take part!

You will join:

The Test and Measurements Section (TM) of the Magnet, Superconductors and Cryostat Group (MSC), as part of the Technology Department (TE), in charge of the qualification of magnetic materials, testing of devices, and magnetic measurements of normal and superconducting magnets. The TE-MSC group has the mandate to design, construct, and test superconducting as well as normal conducting magnets, and to integrate them in the CERN accelerator complex.

The mandate of the TM section includes acceptance test and characterization of the magnetic field of new and existing devices, along with electrical and power tests of superconducting magnets. This work is carried out by an interdisciplinary team of engineers/physicists, technicians, and students working in collaboration with magnet designers and beam physicists. To make these tests possible, and to achieve the accuracy level required to control particle beams, we develop and maintain highly specialised, world-class test facilities, electronic instrumentation and magnetic sensors. In addition, the section is responsible for the development and maintenance of real-time measurement systems that provide crucial feedback to various accelerator control systems.

Functions

As a hands-on electronics or mechatronics technician in the TM section, you will take an active part in the work related to the power tests and magnetic measurements of normal and superconducting magnets, including:

  • Design, manufacture, test and maintenance of hardware and software components of test systems and instrumentation.
  • Development and procurement of components such as PCI/PXI data acquisition cards (digitizers, integrators), analogue signal conditioning components (amplifiers, filters), ancillary equipment (cabling and signal routing components), signal generators and analyzers.
  • Maintenance and calibration of commercial and custom-built electronic and electro-mechanical instrumentation and components, such as rotating and translating actuators, encoders and interfaces.
  • Preparation and execution of test and measurement campaigns in our section’s laboratories and throughout the complex. Documentation of activities, components and test results.

After an initial period, including on-the-job training, you will be expected to:

  • Contribute to upcoming magnetic measurement campaigns for various projects at CERN and partner institutes. This may include installation and maintenance work to be carried out on instrumentation deployed at the premises of commercial and scientific partners.
  • Take up a role of responsibility for the development and maintenance of systems in our diverse and comprehensive instrument park.
  • Take responsibility within a team, of the maintenance of the real-time field-measurement systems deployed at CERN, in support of LHC injector operation.
