Doctoral researcher position at the Chair of Construction Heritage and Preservation

The Chair of Construction Heritage and Preservation  is looking for doctoral students as part of the SNSF research project Architecture & Patent  starting July 2022 or upon arrangement.

The SNSF-funded research project "Architecture & Patent. The Buildings of the ETH Domain" investigates the role of the patent in architecture, both in the development of technical inventions and in the protection of the utility and decorative patterns of design elements. The objects investigated include the buildings of the ETH Domain in Zurich and Lausanne, the sites of the Paul Scherrer Institute, and the EMPA from 1855 to the present day. They fulfil the prerequisites for the patent analyses covering the building history from historicism through modernism and postmodernism to the present day.

Within the research project, you will take on a topic for the dissertation which will be conceived together with the project leadership as well as the responsible professor. You will conduct research both on-site and in libraries and relevant archives. You will independently elaborate research results in the form of lectures, peer-reviewed journal articles and book publications. You will also participate in the organization of workshops and conferences. In addition to your research, you will support the teaching activities of the chair relevant to your dissertation topic.

We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers in the fields of architecture, preservation, art and architectural history, building research, innovative building technologies and sustainability. With this position, you will have the opportunity to build skills and gain qualifications in the areas of scholarly research, writing, publishing, and outreach.

• You have completed your Master's degree or equivalent in architecture, civil engineering or art history.
• You can write in German and English very well and speak both languages fluently. Knowledge of French is also appreciated.
• You are interested in or have already engaged in research on the topics of building research, preservation, construction heritage, building in the existing fabric, building culture, technologies and innovations in architecture.
• You have good scientific writing and communication skills and/or are interested in gaining qualifications in these areas.
