6-month job at the TOM Laboratory, EPFL

Who We're Looking For: The TOM laboratory at EPFL is searching for a master’s student with a strong background in computer sciences and object-oriented programming, who will work closely with Dr. Anna Timonina-Farkas on the project FindeX. Experience with topics in Operations Research/Finance is an advantage. We are looking for the student to work about 60 hours per month. Start date: 1 October 2023.

About FindeX: At the crossroads of Operations Research, Computer Science, and Finance, FindeX is a collaboration project between EPFL and Blackfort AG aiming to revolutionise the way we perceive risks of assets managed via different financial institutions. The project’s core focus is on growing financial networks. It develops a technology to identify Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFI) accommodating changes in network size and structure, thus encompassing newly established small-size banks and those that have ceased operations, such as due to bankruptcy.

The mission of this internship is to develop an intuitive and user-friendly prototype that ranks financial institutions, unlocking insights on Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFI) and assessing the risk exposure tied to their assets.

What You'll Do: As an intern with the FindeX project at TOM lab, you'll be creating an initial user-friendly prototype that empowers financial analysts, regulators, researchers, and policymakers to navigate the complex landscape of global finance with confidence. The ranking of financial institutions will serve a dual purpose: firstly, pinpointing Systemically Important Financial Institutions (SIFI) within the financial network, and secondly, evaluating the risk exposure inherent in assets overseen by these institutions.

In case of interest, please contact Dr. Anna Timonina-Farkas anna.farkas@epfl.ch
