EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 16,000 people, including over 12,000 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

Your mission :
The Wind Engineering and Renewable Energy Laboratory (WiRE) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) searches postdoctoral researchers for a project entitled “Urban Heat Islands: Modelling and Mitigation”. The project aims at investigating heat island effects and potential mitigation strategies by means of (a) numerical simulations (coupling of weather modelling and computational fluid dynamics), and (b) wind-tunnel experiments.

Main duties and responsibilities include :
The main objectives of this project are: 1) Studying urban flows, with emphasis on the influence of heat island effects on the transport of heat, momentum and energy; 2) Investigating potential heat island mitigation strategies (e.g., using vegetation); 3) Validation and improvement of parameterization of heat island effects in large-scale atmospheric models.

Your profile :
The candidates should hold a PhD in engineering or physics and have experience in computational fluid dynamics applications to urban flows (position 1) or wind-tunnel experiments (position 2). Proficiency in English is requested.

We offer :
The position comes with excellent research conditions and a very competitive salary.
EPFL is an equal opportunity employer and family-friendly university. It is committed to increasing the diversity of its scientific staff.
We offer an exceptional working environment at the heart of the EPFL community, including over 10,000 students and 4,000 researchers from 120 different countries.
