Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://icm.uu.se . The positions are available in the research unit of Johan Åqvist and Hugo Gutiérrez de Terán at the program of computational biology and bioinformatics (hhttp://www.icm.uu.se/cbbi/ ). The research is focused on computer simulations of enzyme reactions, ligand binding and membrane-protein mediated signal transduction, in collaboration with experimental groups.

Duties
Current researchprojects involve computational analysis of enzyme evolution and adaptation, mechanistic characterization of signal transduction through G-protein-coupled receptors and software development. The work will involve molecular dynamics and QM/MM computer simulations, free energy calculations, molecular docking, bioinformatics analysis and modelling of protein structure, as well as software development.

Requirements
PhD degree in computational chemistry, structural biology, biophysics or related area or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in either of these areas. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Documented experience of computational chemistry and structural biology is required, as well as scientific skills demonstrated through publications and presentations at national and international conferences. The project involves collaboration between different disciplines and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. In ranking qualified applicants, personal skills such as ability to communicate, collaborate and work independently, as well as scientific maturity and creativity, will be considered particularly important. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are an absolute requirement as the working environment is international.

Additional qualifications
Experience from molecular dynamics simulations, modelling of enzyme reactions, structural bioinformatics, chemoinformatics and experimental biochemistry will be considered as particularly meritorious skills.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of two years according to central collective agreement. Scope of employment 100%. Starting date Sept. 1 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.

For further information about the position, please contact: Johan Åqvist (+46 18 4714109, [email protected]) or Hugo Gutiérrez de Terán (+46 18 471 5056, [email protected]).
