Two Assistant professors with tenure track in Autonomous systems or software (WASP)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 15 Sep 2022

Chalmers is recruiting two Assistant Professors within two strategic areas of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) a) autonomous systems, and b) software. We seek creative individuals to join Chalmers as tenure-track Assistant Professors and accelerate our quest for new knowledge and sustainability.

Information about positions

At Chalmers University of Technology, our inspiring, world class research environments tackle pressing scientific and societal challenges. Through our strong collaborative tradition of combining expertise from different disciplines, we are especially equipped to contribute to complex needs of our society and a sustainable future.

These positions are funded by Chalmers and Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), Sweden’s largest individual research program ever. WASP provides a platform for academic research and education, fostering interaction with Sweden’s leading technology companies. WASP has the ambition to strengthen and develop Sweden’s knowledge and competence in the selected areas important for the modern society. The main focus of the research within WASP is artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to and learning from their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, forming intelligent systems-of-systems. Software is the main enabler in these systems and is an integrated research theme of the program. For more details about WASP see http://wasp-sweden.org/

Autonomous systems
The term “autonomous systems”, somewhat abstract, is used for autonomous artefacts and large-scale self-managing systems consisting of physical infrastructure and software that, together with humans, provide increased functionality, sustainability, and efficiency for society, e.g., self-driving vehicles, smart transportation systems, and cloud infrastructures. The recent technological progress has led to that those autonomous systems can be no longer separated from the environments in which they are embedded. Scientific and technological advances in the areas of data analytics, the Internet of Things, control and decision making, and in perception and sensing technologies are essential to the development of autonomous systems. Collaboration and interaction are other trends in the science of autonomous systems. Chalmers is one of the leading international centers in many areas that are fundamental for autonomous systems and their application,  for example computer vision and decision making for ADAS systems,  autonomous vehicles and life science engineering. The above-mentioned topics are only examples of relevant research areas within this field. We welcome applications even in topics not explicitly listed here.

Software
Research in software technology and engineering in WASP covers both software engineering and software technology for the modelling, analysis, development, training, verification, and deployment of autonomous or AI and ML-based systems. Software engineering contains or utilizes autonomy, automation, AI, learning, or feedback, for example, experiment-driven development practices, self-reflection, self-adaptive software systems, self-repairing software, and automatic programming. Modern programming language research related to automation and AI include areas like high performance compiling and optimization to heterogeneous hardware (including AI accelerators and quantum hardware), probabilistic programming and hybrid euro-symbolic programming. The above-mentioned topics are only examples of relevant research areas within this field. We welcome applications even in topics not explicitly listed here.

Chalmers conducts internationally leading research in several areas that belong to autonomous systems and software engineering and technology. This research is carried out in several departments, in particular Computer Science and Engineering , Electrical Engineering , and Mechanics and Maritime Sciences . It is also carried out in Chalmers Areas of Advance , in particular ICT and Transport, and in several Chalmers Centers of excellence, including the Software Center and Chalmers AI Research Center . Major responsibilities
As an assistant professor you will be active in research, and in collaboration with other researchers at Chalmers, other universitites, and with industrial partners. Our extensive collaborations with industry makes Chalmers strong in its research and education.

As a WASP and Chalmers researcher you will:
● participate in and lead research projects
● supervise students on all levels and postdoctoral researchers
● apply for external research grants as principal investigator, in particular grants funded by WASP
● cooperate with national and international researchers and be active in the research community
● cooperate with Swedish and international industry
● cooperate with WASP researchers and be active in different WASP activities
● and be involved in teaching activities
● contribute to spreading knowledge of science and research outside of academia
● accept tasks of academic citizenship
● work to achieve a good internal working environment

Your time will be divided into research (typically 80%) and teaching (20%) duties.

Position summary
The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year entry-level faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications during this period. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years and if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers. Your host department will be decided by your research background and preference.

An attractive starting package is included in the positions. Each position includes full funding during four years, and additional funding for two PhD students and two postdoc positions.

Qualifications
You have:
• A doctoral degree in a relevant field, not older than 7 years prior to the application deadline of 15th September, 2022.**
• Performed research that has resulted in publications and presentations in relevant and respected venues for your field.
• Shown your ability to create national and international networks within your subject area, for example through co-authored publications.
• Experience of applying for research funding.
• Post-doctoral experience or similar, preferably performed in an environment other than where you did your doctoral studies.
• Demonstrated your pedagogical interest and potential
• Worked towards creating a good internal working environment at your workplace.
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal, in English.

We value highly that you have shared your research with society.

**The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree. Exceptions will be made for longer periods of verified leave, such as parental leave, military leave and sick leave.

Chalmers is looking for the best candidates and, thus, both positions could be in autonomous systems or software, i.e., not necessarily one in each.
