Stockholm University is a leading European university in one of the world’s most dynamic capitals. The University has more than 29 000 students, 1 400 doctoral students and 5 700 staff members active within the natural sciences and humanities.

Project description
We are looking for a Technician who will be responsible for the development and operation of various scientific instruments in our laboratories, as well as measurement instruments and sensor infrastructure on various research vessels, including Stockholm University's (SU) research vessel RV Electra. The position is based at the Department of Geological Sciences (IGV) and includes part-time work at SU's Baltic Sea Centre, which operates RV Electra.

IGV has a large inventory of instruments that require supervision and maintenance. The instruments are important for the analyses in the research projects we conduct. They include various field measurement instruments as well as permanently installed equipment, e.g,  geologic core loggers, IC, ICP, GC, GC-MS, LC-MS, IRMS and X-ray equipment.

IGV is one of three departments in the Geo and Environmental Sciences section of the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The department has about 70 employees, of which 21 are technical administrative personnel and 15 are PhD students. The activities cover three main research areas: geology, geochemistry, and marine geology/geophysics. Expeditions with the icebreaker (IB) Oden are a regular feature of the research activities, which include advanced echo sounders and equipment for atmospheric measurements.

The Baltic Sea Centre (ÖC) focuses on the major challenges in the Baltic Sea and contributes knowledge to authorities and other stakeholders through interdisciplinary research. About 45 employees at ÖC support and develop Stockholm University's marine activities by providing infrastructure such as field stations, ships, and marine numerical modelling for research and education. Our research vessels are resources based at our research station on the island of Askö in Stockholm's southern archipelago. ÖC has provided research vessels for researchers and students at Askö Laboratory since the 1970s. Our current largest vessel is the RV Electra af Askö, equipped with state-of-the-art marine measurement technology designed to serve multiple research and education purposes at Stockholm University.

Main responsibilities
The main responsibilities for the research technician will be:

  • to develop and maintain scientific instruments at IGV
  • to develop and maintain scientific instruments on RV Electra and SU's scientific instruments installed on the icebreaker Oden and similar research vessels
  • to participate in national and international research cruises, conducting geophysical mapping, sediment, water column, and atmospheric measurements.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments in laboratories, geophysical measurement systems on ships, such as multibeam and sub-bottom profilers, fishing research echosounders, and side-scan sonars.
  • Maintenance and calibration of oceanographic measurement systems such as CTD and ADCPs.
  • Maintenance and calibration of atmospheric measurement systems.
  • Incorporation of new measurement systems, such as ferry box solutions, into the ships' scientific measurement infrastructures.
  • Participating in the planning and implementation of scientific cruises and field campaigns in collaboration with researchers and other personnel.
  • Responsible for various administrative IT-related tasks to support the Department of Geological Sciences personnel, such as responsibility for ordering and installing phones, computers, and licenses, managing employees' permissions to the department's IT system, and otherwise providing general administrative support in the IT area.

Qualifications
Requirement:

  • Applicants must have an academic degree in engineering or a scientific education with technical competence that the employer can assess as equivalent.
  • At least 1-2 years of work experience in machinery/technology with practical experience in performing installations and repairs.
  • As a person, you are proactive. You have a positive and solution-oriented attitude and possess good ability to communicate both orally and in writing with researchers and other staff in both Swedish and English.

Meritorious:

  • Experience and knowledge of software for research data collection and processing, as well as scripting/programming.
  • Experience with open science software and databases.
  • Experiences in education/work life that demonstrate a genuine interest in realizing the full potential of our instrument park and marine research infrastructure.
  • Experience in project management and working in scientific teams.
  • Experience in data collection within geo- and environmental sciences.

In this recruitment, we take great importance to your personal qualities.
