Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The research performed at the department of Neuroscience covers the normal function of the nervous system, its development as well as how function of the nervous system is altered following injury and in disease, and how to improve treatment of patients with these disorders. In addition, studies are carried out on genetic and acquired factors that can give rise to or contribute to nervous system disorders and underlie personality disorders (e.g. drug abuse, criminality).

Duties/Project description: The applicant will work within the ZNN group (Boije). Initially work will go towards a project in which we aim to construct a lineage tree of the cells in the zebrafish spinal cord. Main tasks involve setting adult fish for spawning, screening zebrafish larvae, perform heat-shock experiments, collect zebrafish tissue (spinal cord), dissociate cells, FACS sort cells. In addition to the tasks associated with the main project, additional work will include: crossing adult zebrafish to maintain lines and/or screen for founder fish (new transgenic lines), inject gRNA and plasmids into single cells of zebrafish embryos to create new transgenic lines, and perform PCR and qPCR.

Requirements: For employment as a teaching assistant, it is a requirement that you are admitted as a student at undergraduate or advanced level. The candidate requires the following skills associated with the tasks described above: basic understanding of neuroscience; able to handle zebrafish (set adults, collect eggs, screen larvae, cull animals); able to collect spinal cord tissue from zebrafish larvae and adults; able to perform dissociation of collected tissue, able to perform single cell injections in zebrafish embryos, able to perform qPCR and PCR. In addition, the candidate is required to have an ethical certificate that enables him/her to work with zebrafish at the Zebrafish Facility (GEZ) in Uppsala.
