Teaching assistant - Biogas production in an integrated CLEWs framework

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 10 Nov 2021

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Job description

There is enormous biomass potential in the Nordic Region. Biomass resources can be deployed to enhance energy security and use of renewables, and to address environmental (e.g. climate change, and nutrient discharges) and socio-economic challenges (e.g. generating jobs). Out of the total biomass supply in the Nordic countries, forest biomass accounts for 70%, agriculture residues (20%) and the remaining is waste biomass. Deployment of modern bioenergy is considered as one of the countries' decarbonization strategies. In this project, we investigate the role of modern bioenergy as a vector for low-carbon transformation in energy systems in the Nordic countries, with the focus on biogas production from agricultural residues and livestock manure.

The main objective of this study is to explore the biogas production from the agriculture sector (esp. agricultural residues and livestock manure) and identify the nexus with water-land-food-climate-energy systems using geospatial optimization tool.

In this project, we expect that the candidate will (a) review the literature to provide the state-of-the-art in the biogas production and use in Nordic countries; (b) contribute in collecting data to map the supply chains, starting from the feedstock (agricultural residues and livestock manure), conversion technologies, and end-use; (c) contribute in evaluating the production potentials of biogas in different scenarios; (d) visualize the spatial distribution of the biogas production; (e) evaluate the potentials of the sectoral demand for biogas in different scenarios; and (f) contribute in the development of an integrated model in the climate-land-energy-water (CLEWs) framework.

The internship is part of ongoing project NEO-BioCLEWs “Bioenergy and links to agriculture & LULUCF in a Nordic context (WP1)”
