Substitute Lecturer in Game Design focus on Level Design

The Department of Game Design is part of the Faculty of History and Philosophy at Uppsala University. Its teaching and research alike are highly advanced. The Department has some 430 full-time students, roughly half of whom are from outside Sweden, and about 40 employees. The department offers courses in game design and game development at bachelor as well as advanced level, with graphics, project management and programming as minor options. The teaching language is English. To strengthen the Department's education in Game Design, we are now looking for a temporary substitute lecturer in Level Design at the Department of Game Design at Campus Gotland, Uppsala University. Duties
The position includes teaching and tasks relating to course coordination, examination, development and administration. Teaching will take place in campus courses, within free-standing courses as well as courses within the programmes of Game Design. Teaching tasks centre on the craft of level design for games and the position should be prepared to lecture on level design techniques as well as run workshops and supervise student groups, helping them take game environment concepts to implemented and playable levels.

The position mainly concerns the course 5SD055 Game Design 4: Level Design and the following production courses. Game Production 1: Arcade Games and Game Production 2: Vertical Slice

Active participation in the Department’s work requires regular, physical presence at the workplace.

Requirements
To be eligible for employment as a lecturer, a person must at least hold a Bachelor’s degree with relevant subject specialisation; possess solid theoretical and practical knowledge of level design for game development; have completed ten weeks’ academic teacher training of at least ten weeks’ duration, or have the corresponding experience that the Department considers to be equivalent. If special reasons apply, the appointee may attend the academic teacher training during the time of employment. An ability to teach in English is a requirement.

The applicant must have the personal characteristics required to fulfil the requirements of the position well: an ability to work well with others, take the initiative and assume responsibility for personal tasks, to structure work by planning, organizing and prioritizing as well as adhering to established time limits. Experience of project-oriented work and a good ability to express oneself well in speech and writing, in English.

Additional qualifications
Documented experience of teaching in or working with:

  • the implementation or production of levels/game environments,
  • game design and/or
  • game development is a meritorious qualification.

Additional fields of expertise within game development, such as familiarity with notable game engines, agile methodology, sound design for game environments or graphics production are meritorious qualifications. Experience of personal artistic activity and/or personal activity in the game sector and knowledge of requirements for implementation and production of levels in a game development context are also meritorious.

The employment is a temporary part-time position ending 30-06-2023. Scope of employment is 100%. Starting date 02-01-2023 or as otherwise agreed
