Senior research engineer in mass spectrometry-based proteomics

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 30 Dec 2021

We are a newly established lab in proteomics looking for a senior research engineer with experience in mass spectrometry to manage and develop methods on our newly acquired mass spectrometer. Apply before the deadline on 30 December 2021!

Project description
We are a newly established lab in the field of proteomics interested in studying and modulating protein function in the species of the human microbiome. We use systems biology approaches to map protein interactions in these species and to understand the effect of drugs.

We are looking for a senior research engineer with experience in mass spectrometry to manage our recently acquired high resolution mass spectrometer, and to develop new analyses methods. You will also be engaged in educating new users on how to analyze samples and in coordinating instrument usage.

Work tasks
You will be responsible for:

  • Calibrating, maintaining and troubleshooting problems of a proteomics high resolution mass spectrometer
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting problems of two liquid chromatography solutions (nanoflow and fractionation chromatography)
  • Preparing proteomics samples, and developing and implementing the methods to analyze them in these instruments
  • Coordinating the usage of the instruments, and educating new users on how to analyze samples
  • Ensuring that all parts and consumables necessary for constant operation of these instruments are in place, as well as, interfacing with the technical support for these instruments
  • Ensuring that the data acquired is stored and backed-up correctly to avoid data loss

Qualifications
It is required that you:

  • Have a PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related fields
  • Have knowledge and experience with liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry
  • Have wet-lab experience
  • Be able to communicate and present results in English

You are structured and stable under pressure. You enjoy working both autonomously and cooperate with other people. Furthermore, you are good at problem solving and have good verbal skills.

Special merit will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience with Orbitrap instruments
  • Experience with preparing proteomics samples (lysis, protein digestion, peptide cleanup)
  • Knowledge and experience with peptide quantification using tandem mass tags, with offline peptide fractionation by liquid chromatography, and/or nanoflow chromatography
  • Experience with data analysis (e.g., programming knowledge in R)
  • Experience with cell culture (particularly, bacteria)

Application
Your application should contain a personal letter with motivation for why you are applying for the job, a CV, a copy of the relevant diploma and other relevant certificates/grades.

Applications must be submitted via our e-recruitment system no later than December 30th 2021.

Terms of employment
The employment is full time and a fixed-term employment for 24 months. The employment will start 2022-04-01, or as otherwise agreed.
