About the position

The SciLifeLab Metabolomics Platform is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Engineer with extensive experience from Metabolomics to join our team at the Chalmers Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure (CMSI), Gothenburg, Sweden. The Platform services include both targeted and untargeted metabolomics profiling as well as absolute quantification of small molecules. The successful candidate will be a key resource at CMSI, providing general expertise in small molecule mass spectrometry and metabolomics in particular, including in-depth knowledge of tools and analysis strategies. Tasks will include providing hands-on support and guidance in metabolomics from wet-lab to data-processing and -analysis. Furthermore, to provide general support to platform users and the surrounding research environment trough expert competence in the field. The candidate is expected to have high ability to work both independently and as part of the facility team.

Major responsibilities

70% - Metabolomics and other small molecule mass spectrometry projects, including method development, sample preparation, data generation, data processing and analysis, reporting and support to the project owner.

  • Participate in design and take ownership for the execution of metabolomics experiments in support projects.
  • Operate metabolomics workflows, including sample preparation, method development and validation, data acquisition, processing and analysis, and reporting.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and implement assays on a range of mass spectrometers.

15% - Instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, general laboratory maintenance, writing and updating standard operating procedures, invoicing, ordering, receiving of goods and other general tasks.

  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of chromatography and mass spectrometry systems including UHPLC, GC, qTOF, IM-qTOF, MS/MS and other systems.
  • Maintain updated knowledge on state-of-the-art applications and technologies to ensure that the platform remains at the forefront in metabolomics.
  • Implement and help platform users to implement targeted analysis methods.
  • Write and update standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain other relevant documentation, such as for example invoicing and requisitioning documents.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory appearance.

15% - Support and train platform users and other personnel in metabolomics and other relevant techniques

  • Support and train platform users and other personnel in metabolomics and other relevant techniques and analysis.
  • Provide expert advice on technical questions related to metabolomics and small molecule analysis.
  • Participate in relevant meetings.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant field or an MSc with a minimum of four additional years of experience in working with metabolomics and small molecule mass spectrometry applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in untargeted and targeted metabolomics experiments, LC-MS method development, method validation and troubleshooting.
  • Experienced user of UHPLC-HRMS (qTOF, Orbitrap) and UHPLC-MS/MS systems.
  • Proficiency in tools used in metabolomics data processing and analysis, preferably in R or Python environment.
  • Experience that demonstrates the ability to follow relevant state-of-the-art techniques in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience in good communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skill and willingness to work with sample analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or related field with a focus on metabolomics.
  • Expert user of UHPLC-HRMS and UHPLC-MS/MS systems.
  • Experience in maintenance of GC and LC systems.
  • Experience with metabolomics data processing and analysis solutions in R or Python or in other open-source solutions.
  • Ability to drive scientific support projects together with a continuous development mindset.
  • Experience in project management and working in scientific environments supported by strong oral and written skills in English. Oral and written skills in Swedish are seen as an asset.
