The two departments HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design and the Academy of Music and Drama constitute the University of Gothenburg’s Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts – Scandinavia’s largest faculty in design and arts. Crafts

Crafts at HDK-Valand in Gothenburg involves exchange between education, research and society. The Crafts programmes at the first- and second-cycle level include specialisations in Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art. HDK-Valand provides Doctoral studies in the field of Crafts. It also offers free-standing courses to support life-long learning and continued professional development.

The core of the Crafts programmes at HDK-Valand support material and conceptual artistic exploration. The education requires the development of skill-based knowledge, investigates the conceptual identity of the Crafts and aims to foster debate about the meaning of material inquiries in contemporary society. Coursework prepares students for artistic careers that will contribute to the international field of craft.

The Crafts programmes have well-equipped workshops and studios in central Gothenburg. In addition, our partnerships with arts organizations and city-based archives support student learning in craft and exhibition practices.

The Senior Lecturer in Crafts is expected to lead the development and critical contextualisation of artistic and research development in the subject in close connection with colleagues in Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art.

We are looking for a candidate who can take a leading role in management as well as subject and programme development and has excellent organizational and administrational skills, as well as ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues.

The role involves teaching primarily at the MFA Programme in Crafts.

In this context, teaching includes supervision of MFA student projects, examinations, development of course content and administrative responsibilities that pertain to assessment and evaluation.

Part of the assignment includes time for research or artistic development work in accordance with the University of Gothenburg’s working hours agreement that facilitates collaborations between the public, research communities, and education. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a network of partnerships of interest for the faculty and the department.

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as a senior lecturer within disciplines in the Fine, Applied or Performing Arts, the applicant is required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a doctorate in the Fine, Applied or Performing Arts, as well as demonstrated artistic expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value to the subject area of Crafts.

The candidate is required to possess broad experience of craft in an artistic context, rooted in a deep understanding of the significance and meaning of materials. An awareness of current debates in the subject area of Crafts is required. It is desirable that the candidate has knowledge of curatorial and exhibition practices, and/or additional competence within contemporary critical theory.

The position requires prior experience in teaching at a higher education institution level, and recognised artistic, curatorial, and/or theoretical skills at an international level in the subject area of Crafts.

Basis for evaluation of artistic ability 

• Visibility in artistic and professional contexts in the field of Crafts

• Documented experience of successfully developing and leading artistic projects in the field of Crafts

• Demonstrated familiarity and competence within contemporary critical theories and current discourse in the subject area is desirable

• Knowledge of and connection to international networks in the field of Crafts

Basis for evaluation of educational ability

• Documented experience of programme and syllabus development, including examination formats

• Documented experience of lecturing, supervision, and examination within Higher Education

• Demonstrated ability to convey knowledge, as well as commitment and enthusiasm in the subject field of Crafts

• Demonstrated ability to translate current theoretical discourses in the field of Crafts Art into teaching and practice development Knowledge about, and insight into research within the field, including the critical contextualisation of Crafts

• Experience with supervising PhD candidates is of extra advantage

Other grounds

• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with colleagues

• Demonstrated organizational ability

• Demonstrated administrative skills

• Ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing

• Contribution to artistic research or artistic development work within the field

• A doctorate within the subject area would be of extra advantage

Applicants who have not previously undertaken the higher education pedagogical courses provided by the university (or equivalent) are expected to complete these within the first two years of employment.

We will conduct an overall assessment and employ the candidate who is considered to possess the best qualities for implementing and developing the aforementioned tasks.

The employment is time restricted for five years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, section 10, with a possibility of prolongation. The employment is 60% of full time and placed at HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design in Gothenburg, Sweden. The start date is as per agreement.
