Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC) has a tradition of conducting internationally ground-breaking translational medical research in the field of stem cell biology, fertility preservation, in vitro oocyte maturation, pre-implantation and prenatal diagnostics, and intrauterine fetal therapy. Long-standing fruitful collaboration with Karolinska University Hospital especially has enabled translation of research findings to benefit the healthcare and patients at large. We now seek a Senior Lecturer to develop a research and education portfolio in the emerging field of Reproductive and Perinatal Toxicology addressing a wide range of challenges related to environmental hazards. We provide a unique setting with a possibility of multidisciplinary collaboration to establish a high impact research program focusing on investigation into mechanisms of pathology and the impact of exposure to environmental chemicals on reproductive and perinatal health in humans.

Description of the subject area

Perinatal and reproductive toxicology encompasses research on chemical hazards during sensitive developmental periods of germ cell development, embryonic/fetal development, postnatal outcomes, and adult reproductive health. Environmental pollution is burgeoning, human fertility rates are declining, and numbers of women experiencing problems becoming pregnant and carrying a pregnancy to term are increasing. The Senior Lecturer will study the impact of toxic exposures on reproductive health and perinatal outcomes of their pregnancies. The work will directly contribute to the aims set by the National Swedish Environmental Quality Objectives, the new European Growth Strategy Europe 2020, and the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals.

Your mission

The mission of the Senior Lecturer is to carry out high impact basic and translational research in human reproductive & developmental biology and periconceptional & perinatal toxicology. The work is expected to contribute to medical innovation as well as achieving national and international goals of ensuring a non-toxic living environment for the next generation. You will develop research in collaboration with the health care sector, have vision and strategy for clinical applications of research findings, and consider the implications of the findings in a larger societal context. You will contribute to education by supervising students at masters, doctoral and postdoctoral levels and organizing and/or teaching relevant courses. You are expected to teach reproductive and perinatal toxicology in student-elective specialization courses (SVK) within the medical programme in perinatology as well as sex hormones and fertility. You will participate in the regular academic activities at KI, such as evaluation of dissertations, organizing courses, evaluation of research funding applications etc.

Finally, you will carry out administrative duties delegated by the Division/Department, contribute to further enhancing the quality of work environment.  You are expected to foster good ethical principles in research, communicate research results transparently to the scientific community as well as the public and represent KI internationally by playing a leading role in international organizations in the field of human reproduction, fertility and perinatal toxicology.
