Offer Description

The senior lectureship will be placed at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (INES). INES conducts research and teaching within the broad area of environment and climate, with special interests in how changes in climate and environment affect the composition and functioning of the Earth’s ecosystems. INES combines data collection from field studies and remote sensing, analysis of geospatial data, and theoretical studies from e.g. ecosystem modelling in order to understand those processes and interactions between different components of the Earth system.

We seek to recruit a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science with a specialisation in GIS and Remote Sensing that will be able to contribute to the development of our discipline and academic environment at INES.

Job description
The work duties of a Senior Lecturer consist chiefly of research and teaching. Teaching will primarily occur within our introductory and more advanced courses in Geographic Information Systems and Science (GIScience) and Remote Sensing, as well as potentially in other courses offered at INES. Teaching will occur partly within technical aspects of the field but will also include applications within Remote Sensing and GIS in the context of the broader fields of Physical Geography with a focus on climate, ecosystems, sustainable development, etc. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the department’s postgraduate courses. Contributions to research schools (e.g. ClimBEco ) as well as teaching exchange for pedagogical development will be strongly encouraged.

The Senior Lecturer will be expected to initiate and maintain an active research programme in geospatial applications focussing on, for example, one or more aspects of the impacts of climate on land, vegetation and water, methods for the analysis of the carbon cycle, vegetation dynamics and function, natural resources, etc. The research should also complement and/or deepen existing research areas at INES. This would include actively applying for external research funding as well as developing collaboration with other units including strategic research environments and cooperation platforms within Lund University such as BECC , MERGE and LU Land  as well as other state agencies and organisations that work with similar research questions.

A start up package will include resources equivalent to the cost of a PhD student to facilitate building a research group.

The Senior Lecturer will be expected to contribute to take on management roles that would include, for example, acting as course and/or educational programme coordinator.

The duties associated with the position include chiefly research and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A minimum of 25% research time will be included with the full-time position. The duties included with the position, as well as the proportions devoted to teaching and research, may be subject to change over time.

Eligibility
Those qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are a person who has demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve (according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

For this position the qualified applicants must have a doctorate within the field of Physical Geography or Geobiosphere Science (or related disciplines) in which is included a large component of GIS and remote sensing.

It is a requirement to have completed at least five weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. In certain cases, exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to complete the duties of the post well.

Basis of Assessment
The candidate should present their current research activities as well as a research plan for the coming years, including how the research will contribute to ongoing research at the department. Scientific credentials will be evaluated based on an overall assessment of the candidate’s scientific productivity in relation to the aforementioned criteria for the position. The candidate should send in documentation that supports how the required qualifications below are met, as well as to what extent the desired qualifications are fulfilled.

Required Qualifications

  • Very good knowledge of GIS and remote sensing.
  • Documented experience with basic GIS software and techniques within the field.
  • Good knowledge of general Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science with a focus on processes related to at least one of climate, the carbon cycle, vegetation dynamics/processes, natural resources, etc.
  • Experience of teaching within the fields of GIS and remote sensing.
  • Experience of teaching at the university level.
  • Experience with supervision of undergraduate thesis projects.
  • Good research credentials within technical or more applied aspects of GIS and remote sensing.
  • Experience of applying for and receiving research grants, as well as management of research projects.
  • Very good knowledge of both written and spoken English.

Desired Qualifications

  • Cooperation with relevant national or international research networks or strategic research environments.
  • Research activities related to one of INES research or educational foci in order to stimulate further development within the department.
  • Experience with course and pedagogical development.
  • Capacity to teach in Swedish in the context of both lecturing and writing.
  • Experience with supervision at the postgraduate level (PhD students).
  • Experience with distance teaching.
  • Experience with communicating science to the wider society.
  • Experience with fieldwork in different environments.

In addition, importance will be attached as to how the applicant, through documented skills and experience, can strengthen and supplement the Department´s research and teaching in this field.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.
