Senior Lecturer in Ore Geology

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: 10 Oct 2022

Luleå University of Technology experiences rapid growth with world-leading expertise within several research domains. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results and drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are carried out in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of SEK 1.9 billion. Today, we have 1,815 staff and 19,155 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.

We are now looking for a senior lecturer with international experience who can contribute to the development of the Ore Geology research subject, as well as teach at basic and advanced levels and participate in the supervision of master and doctoral students. The Ore Geology research subject currently consists of eight senior researchers, and nine doctoral students. The subject has a well-equipped laboratory for advanced mineral characterization and in situ geochemical analysis, e.g. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA ICP MS), and is looking at expanding into fluid inclusion analysis. We also have access to nearby laboratories, for example X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray computed microtomography and µ-XRF. The subject is also involved (managing) in the research lab infrastructure LUMIA (Luleå Material Imaging and Analysis) at an overarching university level, working as a steppingstone to high-end analysis at national/international lab infrastructures such as the MAX IV synchrotron.

Subject description
Ore Geology includes the use, setting and mode of formation of naturally occurring economic concentrations of metallic raw materials. The research aims at describing the geological conditions that lead to economic concentrations of minerals, as well as how these minerals can be used for a sustainable societal development.

Tasks and duties
As a senior lecturer in Ore Geology, you have expertise in the fundamental skills that underpin economic geoscience, such as mineralogy, geochemistry, petrology and/or structural geology. You are responsible together with professors and senior researchers for the development of the subject at the undergraduate and advanced levels. You are expected to work in collaboration with other scientists and selfsustained. You are expected to strengthen our research and education profile in ore geology and contribute to establishing the field internally and externally both in the form of existing and future education and as a research area on our campus in Luleå. You are responsible for developing, teaching, and examining courses and supervising students at postgraduate levels (MSc and PhD) as well as postdoctoral fellows and for lab management. Fostering collaboration with national and international research groups and working with industry are also an important part of this position. You will be expected to contribute to the international development of the field and actively participate in external funding of research. Writing research proposals and leading research projects is as important as presenting research results through scientific publications and actively participating in the research community within the field.

Qualifications
Qualified for an appointment as senior lecturer are those who:

- have been awarded a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific qualifications;
- have demonstrated teaching expertise;
- have completed courses in higher education pedagogy corresponding to 7.5 credits or otherwise have acquired equivalent knowledge.

Assessment criteria (weighted equally)
For the position, the following criteria are assessed:

- Scientific proficiency
- Pedagogical proficiency
- Other critera

Other critera:

- Scientific background with at least ten years’ experience in multi-disciplinary geochemical and mineralogical characterization of ore deposits and/or mining environments

- Documented record in teaching (course responsibility) of at least five years for Bachelor and Master courses and thesis supervision at postgraduate levels (PhD and MSc)

- Fluent proficiency in spoken and written English

- Scientific proficiency in the subject of ore geology with a focus on the evolution of crustal fluids, (carbonate) ore forming processes and mineral exploration

- Profound mineralogical and geochemical expertise in ore geological survey/analytical methods (from field geology and modern sample preparation/mineral separation to advanced analytical methods e.g. fluid inclusion analysis, automated mineralogy, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XRF, SEM, EPMA and LA ICP MS)

- Experience with research on mineral carbonation for CO2 sequestration

- Extensive background in numerical geodata modelling and statistical analysis

- Ability of obtaining research funding in competition and to collaborate and engage with the wider community and industry through research projects and outreach

- Knowledge within software for data analysis in earth sciences (e.g. SPSS Statistics, ioGAS)

If the candidate does not speak Swedish, the willingness to learn Swedish to be able to teach in Swedish in the near future is desirable

Most employees at the research subject ore geology are currently men. We therefore especially welcome female applicants.
