Geography with focus on physical geography

 Subject description

Geography is the interdisciplinary science that describes what the Earth's surface looks like, explains why it looks the way it does and puts this in relation to how human activity affects it as well as is affected by the Earth. In other words, geography is about the connection and interaction between man and nature, in space and time. The subject is divided into two main branches, physical geography and human geography. Physical geography is the natural science part of geography and includes, for example, climatology and geomorphology. Human geography, is the social science part of geography and includes, for example, mobility, environmental geography and development issues.

The teaching and development of course activities in our geography programs takes place in close collaboration with teachers at the Unit for Human Geography, at the Department of Economy and Society, University of Gothenburg. The position is intended to strengthen integrative elements in the education and research between the Department of Earth Sciences and the Unit for Human Geography at the Department of Economy and Society.

Description of the employment

The tasks include teaching geography with a focus on physical geography at different levels, including basic, advanced and doctoral level. The teaching is done mainly in courses dealing with the interaction between nature and society in a geographical perspective, with a focus on climate and climate change, urban sustainable development, and applied GIS, where programming has become an important aspect of our education. The candidate must be able to demonstrate documented experience and the ability to successfully plan, carry out and lead teaching in geography at university level. Supervision of degree projects in the subject at all academic levels is also expected. The candidate must be able to teach in English and is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years of admission.

The service is intended to strengthen and complement research within the Department's theme area "Climate and Climate Change" and its connection to the theme area "Earth Surface Processes". As the subject of geography is strongly linked to geographic information technology (GIT), geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, the candidate is expected to have competence in these sub-areas which also includes competence in spatial data processing and programming.

The candidate is also expected to collaborate with society at large by linking teaching and research to society's requirements and to contribute to practical applications. Communication and collaboration are thus an important part of this work.

The nature-human-society connection in a geographical perspective is central to this position. Some time for competence development will be granted and other assignments (e.g., committee work and administration) may be part of the position. The distribution of time between research, teaching and other tasks follows the Department's policy and is determined annually in an individual work plan.
