Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of English contains five areas of specialization in both teaching and research: English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish Language and Culture and SINAS, the Swedish Institute for North American Studies. Research at the department is conducted within all these areas. The department has around 1500 students per year and offers approximately 60 different courses. We are now recruiting two senior lecturers in English for permanent positions.

Duties
Teaching, supervision, and examination as well as research and administration. For these positions, the main tasks include teaching and examination on a broad range of undergraduate courses in English, as well as the development, implementation and teaching of subject-related courses for teacher-training students. Duties may also involve teaching general oral and written proficiency in English, oral and written English for specific purposes, social studies, and other undergraduate courses, as well as course coordination, administration, and development.

Regular attendance at the workplace is required for active participation in the Department’s work.

Eligibility
Applicants are eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer if they have demonstrated pedagogical competence and hold a doctoral degree or have the equivalent academic competence. In order to meet the requirement of pedagogical competence, the applicant should have completed at least ten weeks of relevant training in tertiary-level teaching or acquired equivalent competence in other ways. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of employment.

Documented ability to teach in English is a requirement, as is the ability to communicate in Swedish with colleagues at other departments and faculties within the university.

It is a requirement that the applicant’s academic competence, pedagogical competence, and professional skill are relevant to the subjects and duties that the position involves. Candidates specializing in literature in English as well as English linguistics or English education are encouraged to apply.

The candidate should have the personal characteristics required to carry out the duties of the position well. Such characteristics include flexibility, the capacity to work well with others, and a sense of responsibility.

Assessment criteria
In the ranking of eligible applicants, special weight will be given to academic and pedagogical competence within the subject area covered by the position.

Equal weight will be accorded the assessment of the applicant’s competence in teaching and in research.

In appointing applicants to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a qualitative, holistic assessment of relevant competence and skills, is judged to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and contributing to the positive development of the work carried out at the department.

Academic competence: When the applicant’s research competence is assessed, the greatest weight will be accorded to the quality of published research. Research on English from a pedagogical or didactic perspective will be considered especially advantageous. Weight will also be given to plans for future research as described in the application. Moreover, it will be considered an advantage if the applicant has been awarded external research funding in competition with other researchers and has shown an ability to interact both with other members of the academic community and with society outside academia.

Pedagogical competence: Pedagogical competence concerns educational and teaching qualifications. When pedagogical competence is assessed, the quality of the applicant’s teaching is accorded the greatest weight. The extent of the applicant’s teaching experience, that is, breadth and depth at different levels, is also of importance. Special weight is given to experience of teacher training as well as teaching in primary or secondary school, and in this context, a teaching degree in English is considered an advantage. Furthermore, experience of planning and designing courses, online teaching, and distance and hybrid teaching, as well as demonstrated ability to interact with society outside academia, is taken into account. Experience of doctoral supervision and of supervision and examination of undergraduate degree projects will also be taken into account.

Additional information
When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Parental leave, part-time work owing to caring for children, union work, military service or similar activities are considered work experience and should be included in the applicant’s CV.
