The Department of forest mycology and plant pathology offers a stimulating and international research environment. Research at the department includes fundamental and applied aspects of interactions between microorganisms and plants as well as mycology, microbial ecology and evolution. Central themes are plant pathology, biodiversity and nutrient and carbon cycling in agricultural and forest ecosystems. About half of the research in the department is in the area of pathology of crops and forest trees. The position is focused on plant pathology with relevance for agricultural crop production. Current research includes fungal-plant interactions, biological control, integrated pest management, disease resistance, plant defense, evolution of pathogens, population dynamics and epidemiology. The department is responsible for teaching plant pathology for agronomy students as well as in the master program Plant biology for sustainable production, and within courses in mycology, molecular ecology and forest pathology. The department also have extensive cooperation with external stakeholders and society at large. The department is part of SLU Biocentrum that offers an excellent research environment within life sciences with a modern infrastructure, including plant growth facilities. Researchers at the department are also active within SLU Centre for biological control (CBC) – a platform for researchers at SLU performing research on sustainable plant protection. It is also possible to use SLUs long-term field trials. The department have access to the national infrastructure SciLifeLab, which offer expertise and platforms for different “omics-techniques” as well as computational capacity.

The subject area of the employment is plant pathology with specialization in agricultural crops within a Northern European perspective, and can include both basic and applied research questions. The focus can be on interactions between plants and microorganisms, disease management such as biological control, chemical control or host immunity, genetics and genomics of pathogens and biocontrol organisms, adaptation of pathogens to climate change and agricultural practices, or epidemiology of plant diseases.

The applicant should, within the subject area

• develop and manage successful research with relevance for the development of sustainable plant protection in Northern Europe
• develop and lead teaching in plant pathology at first, second and doctoral levels
• supervise PhD students
• develop and maintain international networks with researchers and in society
• communicate research and research findings
• apply for competitive external research funding

The applicant must

• hold a doctorate or have equivalent academic qualifications
• be scientifically skilled in the subject area of the position
• have good ability to communicate in written and spoken English
• be pedagogically skilled

Swedish “universitetslektor”, a tenured position approximately equivalent to Senior lecturer (UK) or Associate professor (US). The applicant who is offered this employment at SLU will be employed as Senior lecturer.
