Offer Description

The Division of Physical Chemistry, part of the Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science, performs experimental and theoretical research within the area of colloid and interface science, involving both synthetic and biological systems. A number of different experimental techniques are available within the division , where scattering methods are particularly important. The European Spallation Source (ESS) and the synchrotron light source MAX IV, as key European large-scale facilities for neutron and X-ray scattering, significantly contribute to the scientific life of Lund, and their close proximity has the potential to strengthen the role of the division as an internationally leading center of excellence in soft matter research. The division therefore has strong ambitions to be actively involved, through close collaborations and projects, with both facilities. The division has also a strong active engagement in the LINXS Institute of Advanced Neutron and X-ray Science, and also in NanoLund, the Lund University center for nanoscience.

Job description
The candidate must have a strong research profile within the area of soft colloids, including both bulk dispersions and near interfaces. The applicant’s research must to a large extent involve the use of scattering methods, using both local in-house equipment and large-scale synchrotron and/or neutron facilities. In addition, the research must also involve flow behavior using both bulk and interfacial rheology experiments combined with scattering methods. The successful candidate is expected to actively engage in the faculty infrastructure platform Center for Scattering Methods, and in LINXS and is also expected to pursue a leading role in interacting with the ESS and MAX IV facilities.

The candidate is expected to develop active research in the area of the call, which includes applying for external funding and developing collaborations with other university units and governmental organizations.

The position entails mainly research and teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The amount of undergraduate teaching will typically be 10-20% of full time. In addition, the position will include supervision of bachelor’s and master’s projects, as well as the supervision of PhD students. The work assignments of the position, as well as the relative proportions of research and teaching, may change over time.

Eligibility
Those qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer are persons who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve (according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 4, section 4).

For this position the qualified applicants must have a doctorate within the field of physical chemistry, condensed matter physics or an alternative field relevant to the position.

In order to be eligible for this position, applicants have to fulfill Lund University’s requirement of five weeks of training regarding teaching in higher education. However, in special circumstances exceptions can be made from this requirement.

For academic staff at Lund University the general qualification requirements are to be suited to and having the general ability required to fulfill the duties of the post.

Basis of assessment
Scientific merits of the applicants will primarily be assessed with respect to scientific excellence, relevance for the call, and the ability to attract external research funding.

It is a requirement that the candidate:

  • has documented research skills in the area of soft colloids, both in bulk dispersions and at interfaces,
  • describes his/her current research themes and presents a research plan for the next few years, and how this relates to the description in the call,
  • has documented skills and competence in the use of scattering methods in research. Both bulk scattering and interfacial scattering/reflectometry are important,
  • has documented skills and competence in the use of rheology methods, including both bulk suspension rheology and interfacial rheology,
  • has documented skills and competence in characterizing the structure of soft colloidal systems undergoing flow,
  • has documented ability to obtain research grants and fellowships in national and/or international competition,
  • has documented experience of supervision of Master and PhD students.

Other merits for the position are:

  • documented experience of teaching and development of new course curricula, at basic as well as advanced level, including postgraduate levels within the applicants´ own and adjacent fields,
  • documented experience of management assignments,
  • documented experience in communicating science, and the societal values of research.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

It is expected that any non-Swedish speaking appointee within a three-year period will master the Swedish language well enough to be able to teach and to communicate with the university administration in Swedish.

Design and content of the application
Applications should be written in English as they will be assessed by international experts. The application should be formulated according to the Faculty of Science’s Instructions for applications for an academic position . Upload the application as PDF-files in the recruitment system.
