at the Department of English . Closing date: 30 september 2021.
The Department of English has an international staff of about 40 people engaged in a wide range of research projects, as demonstrated by the Department’s record of international publications and the Faculty of Humanities recognition of our leading research both in literature and linguistics. Linguistic research interests among our members of staff cover areas such as academic and professional uses of English, varieties of English, language variation and change, English as a lingua franca, and sociolinguistics.
The Department is part of the Faculty of Humanities and provides education at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. For further information, please consult the department’s website: www.english.su.se
The successful applicant is expected to teach various courses in English linguistics, especially in syntax and other areas of general English linguistics. The position also entails supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses, as well as some administrative duties. The applicant is expected to be engaged in research and to initiate, organize, and lead research projects; should publish articles in international peer-reviewed academic outlets, primarily in general English linguistics; and should apply for external research funding to strengthen the department’s international profile. The position also involves administration, and the applicant should be prepared to carry out administrative tasks when necessary.
Applicants should have a PhD in English linguistics, or corresponding research qualifications, as well as demonstrated teaching skills. The teaching skills should be well-documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities. Teaching skills include the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. The candidate must have the ability to cooperate, as well as the ability and general suitability required to perform the duties well.
In the evaluation of candidates for this position, special emphasis will be placed on research skills in general English linguistics and, to an equal degree, on teaching experience and teaching skills within that subject area. Documented expertise in syntax is considered an advantage. In addition, attention is given to administrative skills and the ability to interact with the surrounding community. Strong emphasis will also be placed on the documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues.
Following a qualitative overall assessment of skills and abilities, the University will primarily consider those candidates who are deemed to have the best prerequisites to perform and develop the relevant tasks, as well as to contribute to a positive development of the department’s operations.
