The Department of English has an international staff of about 40 people engaged in a wide range of research projects, as demonstrated by the Department’s record of international publications and the Faculty of Humanities recognition of our leading research both in literature and linguistics. Linguistic research interests among our members of staff cover areas such as academic and professional uses of English, varieties of English, language variation and change, English as a lingua franca, and sociolinguistics.

Main responsibilities
The successful applicant is expected to teach various courses in English linguistics, especially in syntax and other areas of general English linguistics. The position also entails supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses, as well as some administrative duties. The applicant is expected to be engaged in research and to initiate, organize, and lead research projects; should publish articles in international peer-reviewed academic outlets, primarily in general English linguistics; and should apply for external research funding to strengthen the department’s international profile. The position also involves administration, and the applicant should be prepared to carry out administrative tasks when necessary. 

Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a PhD in English linguistics, or corresponding research qualifications, as well as demonstrated teaching skills. The teaching skills should be well-documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities. Teaching skills include the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. The candidate must have the ability to cooperate, as well as the ability and general suitability required to perform the duties well.

Assessment criteria
In the evaluation of candidates for this position, special emphasis will be placed on research skills in general English linguistics and, to an equal degree, on teaching experience and teaching skills within that subject area. Documented expertise in syntax is considered an advantage. In addition, attention is given to administrative skills and the ability to interact with the surrounding community. Strong emphasis will also be placed on the documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues. 

Following a qualitative overall assessment of skills and abilities, the University will primarily consider those candidates who are deemed to have the best prerequisites to perform and develop the relevant tasks, as well as to contribute to a positive development of the department’s operations. 

Teaching and learning in higher education
It is a merit to have completed at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. An applicant who does not have at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education must complete such training within the first two years of employment. Applicants who consider themselves to have the equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal training must state in their application how the knowledge was acquired and how it corresponds to competence provided by formal training.

Additional information
Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement at the time of appointment, but the candidate should be prepared to carry out teaching and administrative duties that require proficiency in Swedish within two years of employment.
