SciLifeLab

SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se ) is a hub for life science research in Sweden and a collaboration between Swedish universities. Everyone at SciLifeLab is employed at one of the partner universities. Since 2013, SciLifeLab has been assigned by the Swedish government to operate national infrastructure, to provide cutting-edge life science technologies and -expertise to Swedish researchers, and to be a top international centre for research in health- and environment sciences. To date, SciLifeLab is situated across 6 Swedish sites and holds 10 platforms, the Training Hub and the Data Centre, which includes over 40 units/facilities and more than 450 staff-scientists in its working environment.


SciLifeLab Training Hub

We are looking for a new colleague that wants to contribute to establishing the SciLifeLab national training support efforts.

The SciLifeLab Training Hub team within SciLifeLab focuses on establishing infrastructure, support and training services for the SciLifeLab life science community, with particular emphasis on supporting and training staff-scientists within SciLifeLab to deliver openly accessible and FAIR training. The current team at SciLifeLab Training Hub consists of training design-development-delivery experts with focus on pedagogy, training support, communication and digital training amongst other things. To strengthen our competency profile, we are now seeking a Scientific Training Officer (Trainer and coordinator) that will focus on Open Science and FAIR training support for trainers and researchers at SciLifeLab to complement the team.


Your profile

If you are an individual that is enthusiastic and engaged in training with a background in Data Stewardship, Open Science or FAIR in relation to training and education you might be the one we need. With the Open Science movement SciLifeLab Training Hub team see the need to bring in the competency profile of data stewardship, Open Science and FAIR in order to build this competency across SciLifeLab infrastructure and the Sweden-based research community. We envision that you will, in collaboration with the team and others at SciLifeLab, support the SciLifeLab staff and affiliated researchers on how to make their training materialsFAIR and openly accessible. In addition we like you to design-develop-deliver Open Science training modules aimed towards the SciLifeLab ecosystem to raise the awareness and educate across the lifelong learning trajectory. You will together with the team develop support processes on how  trainers should make their training materials FAIR.

The role involves collaborative activities in three main areas:

  • Raising awareness of the importance of Open Science and FAIR among staff scientists, researchers and technology experts across SciLifeLab and its ecosystem. 
  • Developing shared work processes and standards with stakeholders to make training FAIR (with regards to training design, development and delivery in topics from the technology- and data-driven life sciences i.e the range of disciplines found within SciLifeLab).
  • Building expertise in Open Science and FAIR among staff scientists and researchers that are the trainers in their topic.

The position will be placed at SciLifeLab Campus Solna at the Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry (DBB) at Stockholm University.


Activities/tasks

Examples of activities the Scientific Training Officer will engage in:

  • SciLifeLab Training Portfolio
    • Support with the design, development and delivery of training modules in Open Science, FAIR and other related topics
    • Develop & deliver training courses, across the several scientific topics within SciLifeLab, together with the relevant SciLifeLab stakeholders such as staff scientists at platforms and researchers in Capabilities
  • SciLifeLab Training Network
    • Support/facilitate the SciLifeLab sites and platforms in strengthening their training design, development and delivery.
  • SciLifeLab Training Portal
    • Quality assure that both established and new SciLifeLab training materials, course materials, and resources are FAIR (especially Findable and Reusable in our training portal).
    • Convert (to the greatest extent possible) SciLifeLab Training materials and resources into open educational resources.
    • Create new resources/guidelines to support trainers/instructors/course leaders in implementing FAIR and Open Science aspects into their courses and teaching/learning activities.

Required qualifications
  • a PhD or equivalent e.g. a master’s degree with several years of working experience, within life science or training/education within the life sciences
  • well-versed in the principles of Open Science and FAIR, and their application in training/education
  • experience with version control systems such as Github, and reproducible ways-of-working (for example markdown, conda, etc)
  • highly organised with the ability to document actions and processes, translate objectives into specific tasks, and prioritise and assign/delegate tasks
  • ability to engage other people to contribute and co-create training
  • experience in working on open projects (this could be open source, open research, or other openly shared collaborative work)

Emphasis will be put on personal suitability. The applicant shall have good interpersonal and communication skills, and be self-motivated. You should be service minded and able to adapt. You should also be quality conscious and result oriented. You should be able to communicate in English in both speech and writing.


Meriting
  • Experience of working with training and/or education using relevant metadata standards, ontologies and controlled vocabularies coupled to training/education is a plus
  • Experience of developing and working according to standard operating procedures
  • Experience of working with user support.
  • Experience of working in international collaborations or networks

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually. Start date will be discussed.
