Researchers focusing on Fish and Fisheries issues (2)

Updated: 4 months ago
Deadline: 14 Jan 2024

Ref. No. SU FV-4450-23

at Stockholm university Baltic Sea Centre . Closing date: 14 January 2024.

At the Baltic Sea Centre (BSC), Stockholm University (SU), our primary focus is on addressing research questions critical for understanding and effectively managing the Baltic Sea. Our research activities extend both within the BSC and through collaborative efforts with other departments at the university. Within the BSC, researchers collaborate closely with policy analysts and communicators to generate and disseminate valuable knowledge to authorities and various stakeholders.

Project description
The project "Baltic Fish" is funded by the Axel F and Vilna Lindmarkers’ Foundation for two researchers specializing in fish and fisheries issues in the Baltic Sea for five years. The project aims to promote and support the development of current fisheries management in a more sustainable direction, with increased focus on rebuilding and long-term sustainable management of Baltic Sea fish stocks. Through various communicative efforts, the aim is to increase public awareness of fishing issues and meet the needs of fisheries management and policy for sound and scientifically substantiated knowledge on various issues related to fishing and the status of fish stocks in the Baltic Sea.

The selected researchers will collaborate with other researchers at the BSC and leverage their complementary skills. The researchers will also, together with environmental analysts and communicators, and in collaboration with a broad network of other marine researchers, participate in communication efforts to improve society's ability to address environmental problems in the Baltic Sea.

Main responsibilities
The positions involve conducting research with a specific focus on the ecosystem-based fisheries management of the Baltic Sea. The researchers' role is to gather and assess existing scientific knowledge to support and critically review decision-making processes and to participate in communication. Communication efforts are planned and prioritized with the Baltic Sea Centre's communicators and environmental analysts.

Within the framework of this project, several important research questions will be analyzed. Depending on the specific expertise and interests of the applicants, the activities could include:

  • Evaluating and synthesizing fisheries research relevant to the Baltic Sea, particularly ecosystem-based fisheries management
  • Elucidate why the populations of several species have dramatically decreased, why the size of fish has been reduced, and how reproduction has been affected
  • Assess the role of the often-intense fishing in the Baltic Sea in these changes. What does the historical picture look like? What reference values are available?
  • Make scientific thematic assessments on the effects of small-scale vs. large-scale fishing on the abundance, biomass, and species composition of fish stocks
  • What are the economic and ecological advantages/disadvantages of small-scale versus large-scale fishing?
  • Assess the consequences of, for example, the European Union's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and/or the introduction of Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQ)
  • Study stock structures. How do different spawning stocks distribute in time and space for our most common fish species? What is their migration between nursery, feeding, and spawning areas like?
  • Evaluate the impact of significant changes in the occurrence and composition of species on the sea's ability to sequester carbon. What role does fish play in the stability of food webs?

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
A doctoral degree in the relevant field of the application (e.g., fisheries science, fish ecology, systems and marine ecology, sustainability science and natural resource management) is required for both positions.

We seek a researcher with high ambitions and an interest in communicating scientific knowledge on relevant future issues for the Baltic Sea.

In the selection process, special emphasis will be placed on scientific proficiency, previous publications, and research background.

Suitable qualifications include knowledge and understanding of fish ecology and current fisheries administration.

Other merits are experience in communicating science to various stakeholders in society.

Considerable importance is attached to personal qualities.

Terms of employment
The position is full-time permanent until further notice with a six-month probationary period. Entry is negotiable.
