Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 45,000 students, more than 7,000 employees and a turnover of around SEK 7 billion.

The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has about 100 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 20 postdoctoral fellows, and 30 researchers, teachers and professors.

The research group of Daniel Espes at SciLifeLab/Department of Medical Cell Biology (https://www.scilifelab.se/fellows/daniel-espes/ ) works to increase the understanding of beta-cell physiology and adaptations in beta-cell mass in health and disease with emphasis on type 1 diabetes. Much of the work is of translational character and we are working with clinical trials in parallel with experimental studies. The methods used in the preclinical lab include animal models of type 1 diabetes, in vivo experiments, transplantation of pancreatic islets, isolation of rodent pancreatic islets, culture of rodent and human pancreatic islets, preparation and culture of induced pluripotent stem cells, in vitro assays, confocal microscopy, , qPCR, ELISA, plasma profiling from rodent and human samples. A number of the projects are conducted in close collaboration with SciLife Lab.

Duties
We are now looking for a highly motivated researcher who will primarily work with projects focused on increasing our understanding of novel aspects of beta-cell physiology and how beta-cells may adapt to stress and immunological challenges.

The projects will involve isolation and culture of pancreatic islets, in vivo experiments of islets of Langerhans. In vitro experiment with human and rodent islets including a number of in vitro techniques with emphasis on qPCR, in vitro assays targeting critical cellular processes, immune staining and histology as well as confocal microscopy. In addition, a number of projects will include plasma profiling techniques conducted both in our lab and in collaboration with SciLife Lab.

The applicant is primarily expected to have a strong background and extensive technical experience in islet physiology, PCR techniques, in vitro assays of critical cellular processes, immune histochemistry and confocal microscopy. Particular emphasis will be payed to academic and collaborative skills as well as the ability to work independently with both planning and conducting of experimental work as well as with summarizing data/results and in scientific writing.

Requirements
To qualify for an employment as a researcher you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree.

It is an absolute requirement that the candidate is highly motivated and enthusiastic about both leading projects and collaborating with researchers in other projects of the group. Also, our research group is currently in an expansive phase and we are working to expand the group and to establish new methods/equipment at the lab and in that work we expect you to take an active part.

Our group also work closely with other research groups both within the department and with external collaborators and you are expected to take active part in these collaborations.

Additionally, the candidate must have/be:

  • Degrees, publications or other proof of knowledge in cell biology and physiology.
  • Expertise of islets of Langerhans and and associated functional and cellular analyses.
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, culture of human and rodent islets, PCR-techniques, cell culturing and in vitroassays.
  • Experience in plasma profiling techniques and associated data analysis
  • High-level computer literacy, with experience in advanced image analysis and qPCR data interpretation.
  • Well organized and highly motivated.
  • Able to complete complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Able to supervise and introduce new group members and students
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, protocol development and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent abilities to summarize results and data and in scientific writing
  • Strong communication skills in English and the social skill to make use of them

Personal suitability and experience from adapting new techniques will be given high emphasis in the evaluation process.

The application should contain a brief description of research interests and relevant experiences, CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, the applicant’s thesis (or a draft) and relevant documentation from postdoc experience. Please also submit letters of reference or contact information of previous research supervisors.

Selection of candidates is based on qualifications, previous work experience, and personal suitability.
