The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has more than 100 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 researchers, teachers and professors.
The research group of Stellan Sandler at the Department of Medical Cell Biology investigates experimentally mechanisms causing to type 1 diabetes (T1D) aiming to increase our understanding of how T1D develops and eventually leads to disease. The ultimate goal is to develop novel strategies to prevent the disease. A special focus in this context is the role of the immune system. Moreover, in collaborative translational projects data and samples from patients with T1D are being analysed in relation to the experimental findings. The experimental methods comprise rodent models of T1D including interventions, advanced cell and molecular biology techniques and data computation.
