Offer Description
Despriction of the workplace
The position is placed at the Division of Solid State Physics at the Department of Physics, a division with around 100 employees where extensive research is carried out centered on various aspects of nanophysics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics to various applications. The division is a central part of NanoLund, Lund University's large interdisciplinary research Centre on nanoscience and nanotechnology. The division includes Lund Nano Lab, a central and shared facility for the production of materials and components at the nanoscale. The Division has a strong commitment to undergraduate education, not least in the Master's programme "Engineering Nanoscience" at LTH.
Over the last twenty years, our research into the production of advanced nanomaterials consisting of nanoparticles produced by aerosol technology has been at the international forefront. We want to extend our research in this area by designing, building, and testing a new aerosol nanoparticle system, mainly with a view to applications in catalysis. A significant part of the position involves aerosol instrumentation.

Work duties
The position primarily involves conducting and leading research within aerosol technology and nanoparticle synthesis. The researcher will play a central role in the development of advanced experimental methodologies and research infrastructure for the production of nanoparticle-based materials.
The specific research project focuses on leading the design, construction, and testing of a novel aerosol nanoparticle system aimed at advancing aerosol-based methods for the production of nanoparticle materials. The main responsibilities include the design, optimization, and integration of aerosol instrumentation required to control aerosol formation processes. The work also includes the simulation, design, testing, and construction of a spark-discharge-based aerosol nanoparticle generator.
The researcher is expected to take a leading role in the project, including planning and coordinating research activities, supervising doctoral and master’s students, and maintaining active collaborations with industrial partners and international research groups.
In addition to method development, the project includes research aimed at increasing the understanding of how nanoparticle properties influence catalytic performance. This work will involve nanoparticle characterization using advanced analytical techniques, including electron microscopy.
The researcher will also serve as a resource within the research group regarding aerosol instrumentation, aerosol measurements, and aerosol processes, and will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and competence development within the group.
The work tasks include:
- conducting and leading research on aerosol technology for the development of novel nanoparticle-based materials.
- developing and maintaining software solutions for the integration, automation, control, and data acquisition of the experimental aerosol nanoparticle system.
- planning, coordinating, and managing research activities within the project.
- supervising doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students.
- establishing and maintaining collaborations with industrial partners and international research groups.
- conducting research related to nanoparticle characterization and catalytic applications.
- contributing to teaching and training activities at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels as required.
- participating in procurement and development of research infrastructure and laboratory equipment.
- preparing reports, scientific publications, research applications, and other administrative tasks associated with the project.
Qualifications
Appointment to a position as a researcher requires that the applicant has a PhD.
Required qualifications:
- a PhD or equivalent research qualification within the subject of the position.
- very good oral and written proficiency in English.
- a strong scientific background in aerosol science, aerosol technology, nanoparticle synthesis, or related research areas.
- practical experience and theoretical knowledge of aerosol instrumentation and aerosol processes.
- proven experience in project planning, coordination, and management.
- documented experience in the design, construction, operation, and characterization of experimental systems for the generation, measurement, and analysis of engineered nanoparticles.
- experience in software development for scientific instrumentation, including data acquisition, instrument control, automation, and system integration.
- proficiency in MATLAB and Python for scientific programming, data analysis, and experimental system control.
- experience in the characterization of nanoparticles using electron microscopy techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and analysis of nanoparticle morphology and properties.
- ability to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative research projects involving academic and industrial partners.
Additional requirements:
- experience with spark-discharge nanoparticle generation or related aerosol-based nanoparticle synthesis techniques.
- experience in nanoparticle characterization using advanced analytical techniques.
- experience with CAD software for the design and development of experimental equipment and research infrastructure.
- experience in scientific writing, publication of research results, and preparation of research funding applications.
- experience in teaching and training activities related to aerosol technology, nanoparticle synthesis, or experimental research methods.
Further information
The position is a fixed term position for the period 2026-09-25 until 2027-0924 at 50 per cent of full time. Researchers are covered by a local collective agreement on annual working hours for researchers and assistant researchers. The planning of annual working hours is done in dialogue between the manager and the employee.
How to apply
Applications are to be submitted via the University’s recruitment system. The application should include a CV and a personal letter justifying your interest in the position and how it matches your qualifications.
