Researcher in Ultrafast Dynamics in Quantum Materials

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: 29 Mar 2023

Ref. No. SU FV-0915-23

at Department of Physics . Closing date: 29 March 2023.

The Department of Physics is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Science and supports a broad range of basic research in experimental and theoretical physics. It has about 250 employees of which 95 are PhD students. Many have been internationally recruited. The Department is part of the AlbaNova University Center, which apart from the Department of Physics houses the Department of Astronomy, the Physics Departments at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita).

Project description
We seek a highly motivated researcher to conduct experimental research on structural and electronic processes occurring during extremely short time periods, down to the femtosecond time scale (10-15 s). In your research, you will be part of a reseach constellation investigating ultrafast transient states in quantum materials using for Sweden unique instrumentation for THz spectroscopy, ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), and ultrafast electron diffraction. When merged these instruments facilitate microscopic studies with the capacity track the position of atoms with a time resolution of a few hundred femtoseconds, facilitating the recording of "movies" that follows the atomic motion while a material go through a change in state. Research topics of special interest include dynamics of charge density waves, electron-phonon and phonon-phonon dynamics, and photo driven phase transitions.

Main responsibilities
Your research will include THz spectroscopy, UEM, ultrafast electron diffraction, diffuse scattering, electron energy loss spectroscopy, nonlinear optics, and femtosecond lasers.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills.

Research experience with quantum materials, femtosecond lasers, ultrafast electron microscopy, ultrafast electron diffraction, diffuse scattering, and time resolved spectroscopy is central to the position.

Preferred qualifications

  • The candidate should possess good communication skills and good command of English in both writing and speaking as he/she will present research results in top conferences and scientific journals
  • Applicants must be strongly motivated by conducting research in the field
  • Possess the ability to work independently
  • Possess a high level of collaborative and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of 6 months. Start date 2023-04-01 or as per agreement.
