Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

Electrification and digitalisation are among the largest areas for the future in the conversion to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in the areas - renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 5G communication and wireless sensor networks as well as smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international workplace with around 140 employees that all contribute to important technical energy and health challenges at the Ångström Laboratory.

The position will be at the division Solid-State Electronics, the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Project description
The research position is primarily included in the exploration of solid-state nanopore technology for detection of biomolecules at the division. The technology has the potential to offer low-cost genomics and proteomics as well as rapid processing of samples with the ability to display results in real time. At the division, we explore various biosensor technologies from device design and fabrication, electrical and optical characterization, to data analysis based on modelling, simulation and deep-learning based signal processing. This project aims specifically to develop novel solid-state nanopores based on standard silicon process technology in cleanroom environment, by benefiting from the existing characterization and theory platforms available at the division. Thermal effects on the functionality of nanopores will be studied.

Duties
The researcher will be mainly involved in fabrication and characterization of the nanopores. Specifically, the researcher will work in our cleanroom laboratory for nanofabrication based on silicon technology. The researcher will also be involved in sequencing/detection measurements of different biomolecules using produced nanopore systems, as well as data analysis and simulation. Thermal effects will be a focal point of such studies as well. The candidate will have opportunities to expand the research into other disciplines in the theme of research work at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Teaching and other activities in the department are also included within the framework of the employment.

Requirements

  • The applicant must hold a Doctoral degree in Engineering Physics and / or Electrical Engineering with a focus on semiconductor process technology and semiconductor components, or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to such degrees.
  • Experience in device fabrication and characterization in cleanroom laboratories.
  • Experience in thermoelectrics, both experiment and theory. Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

We put an emphasis on your personal qualities such as good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers. You should be purposeful, structured and able to work effectively both individually and in groups.

Additional qualifications
International postdoctoral experience in other environments than Swedish.
