Offer Description
The School of Engineering Sciences carries out a wide range of research at the international front line, from fundamental disciplines such as Physics and Mathematics to Engineering Mechanics with applications such as Aeronautics and Vehicle Engineering.
The Department of Engineering Mechanics is a part of the School of Engineering Sciences. The department conducts fundamental and applied research in mechanics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, technical acoustics, and lightweight structures. Within Solid Mechanics, we work on biomechanics, composite mechanics, contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, fatigue, material mechanics, batteries, and paper mechanics. There are strong connections between industry and public actors. The work at the Division of Material and Structural Mechanics will be led by Professor Artem Kulachenko in collaboration with Prof Svetlana Ratynskaia from Space & Plasma Physics, EECS School and Prof. Ricardo Vinuesa from the Division of Fluid Mechanics.
Job description
We are seeking a dedicated researcher to join our team on two projects. The first project focuses on advancing the thermo-mechanical modelling of runaway electron-induced damage of plasma-facing components in contemporary tokamaks and future fusion reactors. The second project involves producing training data for AI-assisted optimization algorithms for developing complex structured materials. The focus in the first project will be on utilising ANSYS/LS-Dyna for simulations, with a strong emphasis on thermomechanical modelling, incorporating damage mechanics and applying Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) or Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) methods. The second project will also involve significant challenges in developing geometrically parameterized thermomechanical model and require proficiency in programming to advance the design of multi-level kirigami materials.
