Researcher in sociology or demography (2 temporary employments)

The Department of Sociology is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences. It contains the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA).

Project description
We are looking for researchers to contribute to the European Research Council (ERC) funded project: A Better Life for the Children of Exile: Intergenerational Adaptation of the Descendants of Refugees, which aims to understand the inequalities that are faced by the children and grandchildren of refugees, and the factors that determine these inequalities.

The project is headed by Ben Wilson and will involve a team of researchers based at the Stockholm University Demography Unit, SUDA, which is part of the Department of Sociology. The aim of the project is to carry out the first comprehensive quantitative study of the descendants of refugees. We will establish a holistic evidence base concerning the inequalities that are faced by the descendants of refugees living in Sweden, and in doing so, we will develop theories and evidence that can be shared with other countries.

Our aim is to compare and contrast four domains of life: health, family formation, residential context and socioeconomic status (e.g. income, education). The project will cut across interdisciplinary boundaries and represents the ideal platform for early-career researchers to gain the skills and experience that are required for a successful and stimulating academic career. Although based in a pre-existing project, there is considerable scope for the successful candidates to determine the focus and design of their research. As such, we welcome candidates with pre-existing research interests and ideas, including those that are linked to sociology and demography, as well as other social science disciplines.

Funding is available for two research positions, in addition to the costs of attending conferences and seminars, as well as advanced training in research methods.

Main responsibilities
Research based on Swedish register data.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and the applicant’s previous publications records in relation to this project.

The applicant should demonstrate solid experience with quantitative research and specific experience with longitudinal data.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. Start date is in January 2022 or as per agreement.
