Ref. No. SU FV-0326-23

at the Department of biochemistry and biophysics . Closing date: 5 February 2023.

The Department is mainly located with the other Departments of Chemistry and Life Sciences in the Arrhenius Laboratories for Natural Sciences, which are situated in the northern part of the University Campus at Frescati. Some 300 people of which about 70 are PhD students work at the Department, engaged in internationally highly recognized research covering a broad range of subjects.

Project description
The aim of the project is to investgiate how nerve cell circtuis in the brain kan organize their activity in network rhythms, with a focus on dopamine-producing neurones in the hypothalamus.

Main responsibilities
We now wish to recruit a researcher with expertise in neuroscience. The work will be focussed on electrophysiological recordings from neurons in brain tissue preparations from experimental animals. Neuronal activity will also be recorded optically, by calcium and/or voltage imaging. In addition, cell- and molecular biology techniques such as immunofluorescence and microscopy will be used, and animal experimental work is included as a large component.

The position entails management of both small and large projects. Participation in general group activities and areas of responsibility are also part of the tasks, as well as supervision, demonstration of laboratory methods and contributing to data analysis. Supervision will primarily be aimed at other group members and internship students at the undergraduate level.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skill. A doctoral degree in neuroscience or a related field of biomedicine, e.g. physiology, is required. The applicant is expected to be knowledgeable about and have experience of the organization and function of the endocrine and nervous systems, and knowledge of the neuroendocrine system is a particular advantage. Substantial and documented (in scientific publications) experience of independent work with electrophysiological methods, and analysing results from such experiments, is required, as is deep knowledge of the membrane properties of electrically excitable cells. The applicant is thoroughly experienced in working with experimental animals, primarily genetically manipulated rodents.

The applicant is required to have significant experience in gathering data and swiftly solving problems related to non-standardised data collection. Considerable emphasis will be placed on the researchers ability to independently conduct neuroscientific research and operating advanced equipment.

Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. The researcher enjoy solving problems, and is attracted by a job that requires flexibility, and an ability to communicate and collaborate.
