Researcher in Musicology, especially popular music studies or ethnomusicology

At the Department of Musicology, we study and teach music from different periods and cultures from historical, aesthetic and cultural perspectives. We have an international profile and encourage applicants with a degree and experience from academic milieus outside of Sweden to apply.

Duties: The duties for this position entail carrying out an individual research project and publishing within popular music studies or ethnomusicology, and applying for external funding within one’s field of expertise. Some administration will also be required. A continuous presence at the department and engagement in its activities and seminars is expected. If required, teaching or supervision of students may be applicable up to 20% of full time.

Qualifications: To qualify for the position you should hold a Ph.D. in Musicology or in a related discipline, and have the qualifications required to successfully complete an individual research project. The applicant is expected to have very good written and spoken English.

Application process: A complete application, including publications should include:

  • Curriculum vitae along with certified copies of degree certificates, grades, and all other documents included.
  • A list of five scholarly publications, including the Ph.D. thesis. Publications should be listed in descending order of relevance to the application and be attached to the application in PDF format.
  • A research plan of up to 9,600 characters. The plan should include: an overview of the proposed research; a clear statement of the project’s aims; a description of how the project would further knowledge in the field; a discussion of relevant methodological issues; and a plan for publications.

Assessment criteria: Applications will be assessed by the scholarly merits and feasibility of the proposed project, and the qualifications of the applicant. When considering candidates for this position we place a high value on innovative and original thinking. We are particularly interested in candidates who are in the early stages of their research careers.

About the employment: The employment is a temporary position of 9 months full time. Starting date is 1 August 2023, or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
