Deadline: 21 Apr 2024

Ref. No. SU FV-1011-24

at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plans Sciences . Closing date: 21 April 2024.

Stockholm University is a leading European university in Sweden’s dynamic capital city. The University has more than 33,000 students, 1,600 doctoral students and 5,500 staff members active within the natural sciences and humanities. Research and education at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) is located in the Arrhenius Laboratories, situated at the University Campus at Frescati. Research spans a broad range of biological subject areas including ecology and evolution, ecotoxicology, marine biology, plant physiology, systematics, and environmental and climate science.

Presently around 100 people, including 35 PhD students and 10 postdocs, in 25 research groups work at DEEP. The research environment is characterized by its international focus and collaborative and stimulating working environment. The senior staff are both active researchers and teachers. They teach on many different courses that are part of biology education at both Bachelors and Masters level.

Project description
The position is associated with the project Genome evolution in parasitic plants and the current focus is on largest clade of parasitic plants, the order Santalales. Within the Santalales, the mitochondrial respiratory pathways has experienced unique changes compared to all other land plants and the mitochondrial genome can be strongly modified. In a phylogenetic framework the current project aims at tracing this extraordinary mitochondrial genome evolution and its potential correlation with traits related to the diverse parasitic lifestyles within the Santalales.

Main responsibilities
The researcher will be associated with an ongoing project where much data has already been collected. Thus, the primary tasks are data analysis and collaborative writing of scientific papers. Data analysis includes extraction of mitochondrial data from available NGS data sets, assembly of mitochondrial genomes or genes, phylogenetic reconstruction and downstream evolutionary analysesThe position involves research.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. Documented proficiency in use of NGS data and application of bioinformatics tools for downstream analyses including phylogenetic analysis is needed. General understanding of plant systematics and genome evolution is desirable.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of 12 months. Start date as soon as possible.
