Subject area

Legal Theory and Philosophy

Description of subject area

At the Center for Aging and Health, Agecap, multidisciplinary research is conducted for good and valuable aging. The Department of Law is one of the participating departments focusing on structures and mechanisms at a societal and organizational level, relevant to the welfare society and to phenomena such as ageism and age discrimination, especially in matters of work and retirement, and how these promote or hamper the capacity of the older people. The relationships between living conditions, the historical context and the social context of individuals and socio-economic conditions, are central aspects, e.g. studies of development over time and how older people's capacity is promoted or counteracted. Changes in the regulatory systems relating to supply, (re) distribution and opportunities to work are examples of aspects that are central to seeing and understanding the development.

Furthermore, studies of the implementation of political action programs in and through legal regulation may be included. What is the purpose of a certain regulation, is the purpose achieved and how does it correlate with practitioners at the organizational, government and workplace level? Here, empirical studies of both legal material and practitioners, could be of interest. The importance of the Discrimination Act and the Ombudsman can also be addressed. Also, freedom of choice and self-determining as central concepts are relevant issues. What are the requirements for full self-determination for older people? And how does discrimination and lack of resources for older persons interact with other discriminatory practices, such as gender, socio-economic situation, ethnicity, etc.? An intersectional perspective is central to better understanding how the macro level affects the capacity and living conditions of the older. These issues are complex and require both theoretical and substantive knowledge, but also the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries. The employment is part of a long-term strategy of building a multidisciplinary environment.

Job assignments

The position mainly comprises research, but some teaching may be required. The candidate is expected to contribute to one or more research and teaching environments at the Department of Law, independently as well as in collaboration with other researchers affiliated with the Department of Law. In particular, the environments of Legal Theory and Philosophy, Public law, Civil law and Social Sustainability may be of interest depending on the candidate’s orientation. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the multi. And transdisciplinary research environment within Agecap.

The candidate will be expected to publish high-quality research and otherwise contribute to the advancement of the academic environment at the department and within the Agecap center formation.

Some funds for travel will be available, but the applicant should also seek to attract additional external funding.

Qualifications

A requirement for the position is a PhD degree in a legal field closely related to the subjects of the research project.

In this recruitment, competences and skills, together with documented qualifications, will be assessed in light of the anticipated ability to perform the working tasks in question, and to contribute to the research project. How the scientific qualifications of the applicant are related to the project’s goals, methodological points of departure, and theoretical perspective, will be of particular importance.

The applicant’s ability to cooperate internally and externally, in order to perform the working tasks, will be an important part of the assessment of the applicant’s suitability for the position.
