Researcher in Inorganic Chemistry with focus on electrocatalysis

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry . Closing date: 31 December 2021.

The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry (MMK) is, with about 160 employees, one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Natural sciences at Stockholm University. A significant part of the teaching activities is at the undergraduate level with courses in General-, Physical-, Inorganic-, and Analytical Chemistry. The teaching at the graduate level focuses on the master programs in Sustainable Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. Research activities of MMK focus primarily on materials, and include different classes such as ceramics, glasses, self-assembled, porous materials, and soft matter. The projects often encompass synthesis, and characterization by X-ray, neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, solid-state NMR, and computer modelling of materials with a potential for various applications. Research activities in the area of Analytical Chemistry focus on developing advanced analytical techniques for studies of organic compounds and biomolecules.

Project description
The project is about development of efficient heterogeneous electrocatalysts and mechanistic studies of the catalytic process for oxidation of alcohols, mainly glycerol. The project is primarily about synthesizing, characterizing and evaluating heterogeneous catalysts. Electrocatalysis is an important area of research as efficient catalysts save energy on chemical processer and can make entirely new chemical processes possible. We not only strive to find and rank effective catalysts, but we also strive to understand the catalytic reaction mechanisms.

Main responsibilities
The work consists of synthesizing catalytic materials, mainly alloys, for further production of electrodes for oxidation of alcohols. The materials should be further characterized by appropriate experimental methods and their catalytic effectiveness tested. It is desirable that the applicant is responsible and has a good cooperative ability. The position involves collaboration with doctoral students, postdocs and master's students; experimentalists as well as researchers working in theoretical modeling.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
For this position special emphasis will be placed on scientific skill in synthesis of inorganic materials and heterogeneous catalysis. It is desirable that the applicant has experience in synthesis and production of electrode materials. Documented experience of relevant characterization methods such as PXRD, SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS and electrochemical measurement methods such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry are important for the applicants' ranking. Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience of the above experimental methods through publications.

Terms of employment
The position is full-time and applies for one year. Entry 2022-02-01 or by agreement.
