Offer Description

Subject description
Research associated with an ERC-project: PALEOCORE: Core dynamics on millennial timescales. Within the project we will develop new and more efficient methods to reconstruct changes in Earth’s magnetic field and the fluid flow at the top of the core based on palaeomagnetic data, e.g. from sediments, with dating uncertainties.

 Work duties include
To further develop a Bayesian geomagnetic field model based on palaeomagnetic data with chronological uncertainties (Nilsson and Suttie, 2021) in order to more efficiently handle larger datasets. Develop new ways to efficiently treat correlated age uncertainties associated with stratigraphic data from sediment cores in the model. Develop a new method to handle relative palaeointensity data from sediment records and associated lock-in processes in the model. To implement and test alternative MCMC methods to better deal with problems associated with complex posterior distributions in existing age-depth models based on stratigraphic data.

 Qualification requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in geophysics/physics.
  • Extensive knowledge in Bayesian statistics.
  • Extensive experience with palaeomagnetic analyses and assessment of uncertainties in palaeomagnetic data.
  • Experience with modelling Earth’s magnetic field based on palaeomagnetic data.
  • Good cooperation and communication skills.
  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

 Assessment criteria and other qualifications

  • Scientific publications linked to the research project.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

Permanent employment, starting February 15, 2024. Proibationary period of 6 months might be applicable.
