The division of Ethnology at the Department of Ethnology, History of Religion and Gender Studies is one of the departments at the Faculty of Humanities with about 70 employees and 14 doctoral students. The research at the department is focused on various topics situated in different contexts in time and space. The three disciplines share a commitment to make the cultural and social world intelligible by means of fieldwork and studies of all kinds of textual sources. The division of Ethnology at Stockholm University has about 20 employees and “Museums and cultural heritage”, and “Diversity and globalization” are two prominent themes in education as well as research.

Project description
The Department of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender Studies invites applications for a 2-year part time (0.5FTE) research position within the division of Ethnology to work on the Swedish Research Council funded project: ‘The afterlives of migration: Integration, ordinary ethics and intimate citizenship’. The study aims to examine the concept of integration through the narratives of those who are considered to be “integrated” in Sweden and United Kingdom. Earlier studies have shown that an integrated migrant is often seen as someone who has gained a certain level of upward social mobility and social recognition. But what does this mean for each individual? What does it mean to belong, on what terms, for how long? With what costs? The study approaches these questions by examining integration both as a process and as an outcome. By focusing on everyday dilemmas, in work life, family life, and social networks, the understanding of integration is deepened as an ongoing process that actualizes both vulnerability and a sense of belonging. The study has two main areas: (i) examination of key themes in national policy documents on initiatives related to integration in Sweden and England over the past 10 years (2013-2023); (ii) how individuals narrate their everyday lives and dilemmas in the context of integration discourses. The material therefore consists of both text-oriented discourse analysis of policy documents and government investigations, as well as biographical narratives.

Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be an experienced social science or humanities researcher who will undertake discourse analysis of key immigration policy documents and directives in Sweden and the UK related to the integration policies. The responsibilities will include reviewing and identifying government documents (between 2013-23) and relevant academic and policy literature. The research fellow will contribute to the research design, undertake discourse analysis of policy documents, assist in developing a coding framework for qualitative interview data analysis (in NVivo), dissemination and academic publications. The research fellow will provide support in recruiting participants to individual and focus group interviews, contribute to the project’s public presence and will participate in relevant project meetings and events.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for the purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
Applicants are expected to:

• Hold a relevant PhD or an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study
• Be fluent in both oral and written Swedish and English
• Demonstrate knowledge and experience of discourse analysis and the coding of qualitative research materials
• Demonstrate interest in and/or knowledge of immigration policies in Sweden and the UK.

The doctoral degree must have been completed before the employment decision is made. Comprehensive knowledge in migration and border studies are considered as merits. The area of responsibility includes the review and identification of government documents (between 2013 and 2023) in Sweden and UK and relevant academic and policy literature. Contribution to the research design, conducting discourse analyzes of policy documents, assisting the development of a coding system for documentary and qualitative interview data analysis (in NVivo). The researcher should also help in recruiting participants for individual and focus group interviews, contribute to the project's public presence and should participate in relevant project meetings and events.

Because the position involves considerable collaboration with project members and some project management responsibilities, personal skills such as good communication and analytical skills, ability to work independently and take the initiative, and a well-developed sense of team responsibility are considered as additional merits.

Terms of employment
The employment is permanent with a scope of 50-75 %, start date according to agreement.
