at the Department of Molecular Biosciences . Closing date: 22 October 2022.
Research at the Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) experimentally addresses fundamental problems in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. State-of-the art and advanced methodologies are applied in a professional research environment characterized by its well-established international profile. The institute has 30 research groups with a research staff of 170, of which 55 are PhD students. Read more about MBW at www.su.se/mbw .
We are looking for a highly motivated researcher with an interest in immune cell regulation and host-microbe interactions. Our lab works with Toxoplasma gondii, an opportunistic pathogen in humans and animals, and also a model for understanding the biology of intracellular parasitism.
The research aims to define the molecular mechanisms utilized by intracellular parasites, to manipulate the host´s immune system to their own advantage and thereby promote colonization and transmission of infection. Recent work from the lab has shown that Toxoplasma exploits cells of the immune system to disseminate. Shortly after parasite invasion, immune cells are transformed into hypermigratory `Trojan horses’ that mediate dissemination.
This ‘hijacking’ involves parasite-derived factors secreted into the host cell and non-canonical GABAergic signaling and calcium signaling pathways. We want to decipher how this intracellular parasite commandeer vital host cell functions. The processes of host cell-parasite interactions and systemic dissemination are studied using molecular and cellular experimental approaches, animal models and various imaging modalities.
The position involves research and laboratory-based experimental work within the above described project.
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills.
The applicant must have received a doctoral degree in the field of biological or medical sciences. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in experimental biology. Applicants must have demonstrated productivity in pursuing research in relevant or related disciplines. Relevant expertise may include experience in flow cytometry, cell signaling pathways and cell motility, transduction and transfection of cells, electrophysiology, advanced microscopy and animal experimentation. Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken, are a requisite.
