Researcher in Biophysics

Updated: about 2 months ago

at the Department of Biocheimistry and Biophysics . Closing date: 10 June 2021.

SciLifeLab is a national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a national resource hosted by Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. The center also collaborates with several other universities.

Project description
To support the ongoing research, we aim to set up a Protein Engineering Center with the knowledge base, experimental capacity and expertise necessary to deliver services that would address a gap in protein characterization capabilities. It will build upon the established Technology Development Project that started as a service facility effort at SciLifeLab in 2018 with A. Amunts as the PI.

The work will involve methods of three types: protein engineering, expression, and purification. All three are within the expertise of a recruited specialist. The manufacture will be performed in insect, mammalian and human cells. A sufficient quantity will be ensured by employing novel methods of cell growth in suspension and recruitment of an additional full-time specialist. Protein purification will take advantage of already existing large variety of chromatographic techniques such as affinity chromatography, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography and size exclusion chromatography.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research in the field of protein production. Protein purification will take advantage of already existing variety of chromatographic techniques such as affinity chromatography, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography and size exclusion chromatography. A successful candidate will be required to report on the monthly basis.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills, publication track record, and previous experience in difficult problem solving.

Expertise is required in independent formation of stable cell lines and transient transfection for small- to large-scale expression cultures to produce milligram quantities.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension. Start date as per agreement.
