Biomechanical and mechanobiological principles of soft musculoskeletal tissues
The biomechanics group is located within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, at the Faculty of Engineering. The research is focused on understanding the link between mechanics and biology in the musculoskeletal system, including related pathologies and repair of skeletal tissues. Experimental studies, tissue characterisation, imaging and computational simulation techniques are used. The research is applied on problems in orthopaedics to develop better methods to understand and improve repair of musculoskeletal tissues.
The group encompass about 10-12 scientists (PhD students, post-docs, researchers) and is located at the BMC-building. The expertise includes computational and experimental mechanics of biological tissues, where a large part of the experimental work takes place at large scale facilities, using imaging, scattering and spectroscopy-based techniques.

Work duties
The main duty involved in a reserach posistion is to conduct research.
The research will focus on developing, supporting and using experimental imaging methods for soft tissue, primarily synchrotron phase contrast X-ray tomography, to characterize tendon, meniscus and cartilage microstructure and its relation to loading, but also other imaging modalities, such as scanning electron microscopy, are used.
The work duties include:
- to take responsibility for designing, planning, and performing experiments, including 3D tomographic imaging, mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy
- to design image analysis approaches, specifically dealing with large amount of data
- to supervise MSc degree projects and to assist in supervision of doctoral students
- to assist the group when seeking external research funding
- to support the group’s infrastructure, including users in microscopy and mechanical testing of tissues.
- to collaborate with industry and/or society
- administration connected to the duties above
Qualifications
Required qualifications for the position are:
- a PhD degree within the subject of the position
- very good oral and written proficiency in English
- knowledge in (bio)engineering or material science or similar
- knowledge in 3D imaging and data analysis
- knowledge in microscopy, preferably with SEM
- experience from synchrotron tomography
- experience from tissue mechanical testing, preferably soft tissues
- experience to independently drive research projects of high quality, as well as documented experience of writing scientific publications
- experience from supervising students
Additional qualifications for the position are:
- personal qualities including good collaborative skills, drive and independence
- experience with multidisciplinary research projects
International experience and networks are considered positive.
Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
Further information
Employment is for an indefinite term with a scope of 100 per cent of full time starting in January 2023 or by agreement.
