Researcher assistant in biophysics and biomolecular

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Deadline: 09 Jun 2022

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment. The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science. The department collaborates with various societal actors such as schools, business and authorities. The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology has around 200 employees. We are located in central premises both on Campus Johanneberg and on Campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.

The group of S. Westenhoff studies the structural changes of phytochromes photosensor proteins with his ERC grant MOLSTRUCDYN. Phytochromes are light-sensing proteins that monitor the level, intensity, duration, and colour of environmental light. They control numerous light-dependent processes in plants, fungi, and bacteria. Phytochromes are promising targets in the expanding field of optogenetics to allow precise light control of various internal cellular processes. In this project work, you will explore the NMR spectroscopy of phytochrome proteins in close cooperation with the NMR center and Professor V Orekhov

Duties

The successful candidate will be involved and provide/share his/her expertise in NMR assignment (backbone and methyl) of large protein systems in application to the monomeric (509 residues) photosensory module (PAS-GAF-PHY) fragment of the DrBphP at its several functional states. Specific focus will be on using CCPN software. You will interact with the other members of the ERC project on time-resolved structure, and contribute your results to the better understanding of the protein and in preparation for time-resolved structural experiments through crystallography and X-ray scattering.

Qualifications
  • When starting the employment you must have MS degree in biophysics, structural biology, or similar subject.
  • MS level education in NMR spectroscopy
  • Practical experience in using CCPN software for assignment of large protein systems, as well as software for NMR spectra processing and graphical presentation of protein structures
  • Fluent English

Merit education, knowledge and experience, personal qualities

experience with AlphaFold and python programming

Employment

Fixed term, full time,  100%, 6 months employment at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology
