Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
Signal Transduction Laboratory, Rolf Luft Research Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Karolinska Institutet.
Description of the subject area
We are focusing on in vivo signal-transduction in pancreatic islet cells under physiological and diabetic conditions. The main objective of this project will be to use the anterior chamber of the eye and the mouse brain as transplantation sites for pancreatic tissue combined with subsequent intravital microscopy in animals with and without anesthesia. The use and development of genetic tools to manipulate the transplant tissue will be essential, as are analytical methods such as Ca2+ imaging, protein and mRNA assays, and immunohistochemistry.
Your mission
The Rolf-Luft Research Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology is recruiting a Research Specialist to set up an intravital microscopy platform for longitudinal observation of the metabolism and function of pancreatic islets. The technical objective is to dispense with anesthetics while at the same time providing the greatest possible image stability for confocal and 2-photon microscopy. In the long term, the microscopy platform is to be made accessible for various sub-projects such as tissue engineering or regenerative medicine. Therefore, working closely with the rest of the team will be an essential part.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.
The applicant must have demonstrated relevant research expertise in animal experiments, such as
behavioral studies, cranial window surgery, isolation and transplantation of pancreatic islets, 2-photon/confocal microscopy, analysis of intracellular Ca2+ changes, immunohistochemistry, neuro- and protein biochemistry, and intravital imaging. In addition, we expect excellent knowledge in transgenic mouse models, in vitro cell research and in the application of genetic tools such as biosensors, CRISPR technology, and optogenetics. He/she should demonstrate his/her ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously, solve problems independently and interact well with group members. Previous experience supervising doctoral students constitute a strong merit. The applicant should also have scientific production in recent years in internationally prestigious journals.
Assessment criteria
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
