Research Specialist in Bioinformatics

Updated: 3 months ago

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for an ambitious PhD graduate with advanced skills in bioinformatics and/or epigenomics to perform cutting-edge research in the Laboratory of Chemical and Synthetic Systems Biology. We offer an engaging and international research environment and the opportunity to contribute to high-quality research on an internationally competitive level. We are looking for a highly motivated individual, who excelled during her/his doctoral studies, has substantial computational experience, and strong documented interest in epigenetics in particular.

The research group

The Elsässer group is an international and multicultural research group that focuses on applying new synthetic and chemical biology methods to understand chromatin structure and function. We are a dynamic, collaborative, and supportive team within the Division of Genome Biology, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics located at the Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm. The group includes senior and junior researchers, bioinformaticians, administrators, PhD students and undergraduate trainees.

Your mission

To unravel the molecular circuits that underlie epigenetic gene regulation and inheritance, my laboratory combines chemical and synthetic biology manipulation of living cells with systems-level (genomic and proteomic) readouts. The successful candidate will thus participate in the processing, analysis, integration and publication of next- generation sequencing (NGS) data including quantitative ChIP-Seq, RNA-Seq, TT-Seq, chromosome interactome data and proteomics. The tasks will include statistical analysis, meta-analysis and data modeling. The successful candidate will work together with other members of the team and with collaborators. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential for this position. For more information and latest news visit http://elsaesserlab.org

Your profile

A doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree, and at least four years of research experience as a postdoctoral researcher are required. Appropriate to the career level, an outstanding education and productivity record is expected. Previous experience in quantiative (epi)genomics pipeline development, genomics data visualization, documentable in publications and/or software packages are a prerequisite. Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in a bioinformatics or computational field
  • At least four years of research experience in (epi)genomics

Assessment criteria

Required skills of the successful candidate are:

  • firm knowledge in R, Unix/Linux, Perl, Python
  • robust mathematical and statistical background knowledge
  • extensive experience in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data
  • experience in pipeline development and data management
  • knowledge of relevant biological areas (chromatin and gene expression, genetics and epigenetics)
  • experience in MatLab, Mathematica or related programming languages is an advantage
  • excellent knowledge in biostatistics
  • experience in data genomics data mining and visualization
  • proficiency in written and spoken English
  • experience in publishing software (provide a link to your GitHub repository)

It is a merit if the applicant can document the following:

  • Excellent understanding of biological concepts and/or willingness to learn. Experience in working with wet lab scientists is a plus
  • Excellent organizational, communication and social skills
  • Excellent presentation skills

The bioinformatician will work closely with the main supervisor, Dr. Simon Elsässer, wet lab students and postdocs that generate the data, and experienced bioinformaticians.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
