The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Solna conducts research and education in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. Our keywords are interdisciplinary, clinically based basic research and national and international cooperation.


Description of the subject area

We search for a Research specialist that, together with Professor Birgitta Henriques Normark and her research group, will work on projects in bacteriology especially targeting the pathogenesis and the type VI secretion system in Klebsiella pneumoniae. The research group focuses on studies of host-microbe interactions with a major interest in gram-positive infections such as pneumococcal infections.


Your mission

This position includes microbiological in vitro and in vivo pathogenesis studies with a focus on the human pathogen Klebsiella. Molecular and different omics approaches as well as visualization technologies will be used to study pathogenesis.


Your profile

A PhD in bacteriology and especially on gram-negative bacteria and on bacterial secretion system will give priority. Previous experience in bacteriology and molecular microbiology is favorable, especially previous experience on gram-negative bacteria, bacterial pathogenesis and on type VI secretion systems, as well as on using visualization technologies such as electron microscopy. Documented experience in relevant research areas and extensive experience on microbial molecular technologies, and of in vitro and in vivo model systems is an advantage. Experience with scientific collaborations, as well as experience in project management are of advantage, in addition to social skills and language skills, especially in English and Swedish.  Interpersonal skills and excellent capabilities to work in a group are essential.

Qualified to be employed as a Research specialist is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Preferably the Research specialist should have experience of postdoctoral research for at least 5 years.


Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.
