Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The research at the Division for Biomaterials focuses on new bioengineering techniques and new materials for cell biology research. The goal of many of our projects is to develop new methods that will help us and others to better understand biological processes at the nanoscale and up. In particular we are interested in how to control and study cell behaviour through their ability to sense their micro-environment.

Your mission

We are looking for a Research Specialist to join the research group of Professor Björn Högberg at the Division of Biomaterials. The candidate will lead our super resolution microscopy related projects as well as aid other members of the group and division in their imaging experiments. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the maintenance of our super resolution microscopy instruments as well as train and assist other members of the division in the usage of the instrument.

The focus of the projects are the development of novel, DNA-based labeling methods for high throughput transcriptomics and proteomics using DNA origami or other DNA nanotechnology approaches.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

In order for the applicant to fit in the general theme of the laboratory the applicant should be well experienced in laboratory techniques used for production, purification and characterization of DNA constructs. In addition to this the applicant should have a strong knowledge of software tools and laboratory techniques used  for the production and characterization of DNA origami structures. As the candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the division’s super-resolution TIRF microscopy instrument the position specifically will require a expert knowledge of the TIRF microscopy technique, the operation and maintenance of TIRF microscopy equipment and localization based super resolution techniques in particular DNA-PAINT, along with related software used for microscope operation and data processing. The work will also include using next generation sequencing techniques, the experience of sample preparation, data generation and processing for such techniques thus is also a strong requirement for the successful candidate. A strong knowledge of programming language (e.g. Python) and software modules used for microscopy and next generation sequencing data processing is also highly encouraged.

Assessment criteria

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
