Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

at the Department of Archaeolgy and Classical Studies . Closing date: 12 May 2022.

The Department of Archaeology and Classical Studies is the largest archaeological environment in Sweden. It consists of seven sections: Archaeology, Stockholm Numismatic Institute, Archaeological Research Laboratory, Osteoarchaeological Research Laboratory, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution and the Centre for Palaeogenetics.

The Centre for Palaeogenetics is a collaborative effort between the Swedish Natural History Museum and Stockholm University. It is a modern facility, focused on degraded DNA extracted from historic and prehistoric tissue. Centre was inaugurated in 2020 and is presently one of the largest and most modern ancient DNA facilities in the world, equipped to extract and analyse DNA from a variety of types of ancient tissues. The Centre for Palaeogenetics presently hosts several research groups with different research focuses (archaeogenetics and palaeopathology, palaeoecology and evolutionary genetics, sedimental DNA, and environmental DNA), and with different home departments (archaeology, zoology, geology at Stockholm University, and bioinformatics and genetics at the Swedish Natural History Museum). In the duration of the position, some 30 researchers distrinuted among four research groups will be active at the Centre for Palaeogenetics.

Main responsibilities
The Research engineer will be responsible for organizing the work in the ancient DNA laboratories and also participate in the production of large scale sequence data from ancient materials. It is also expected that the successful applicant will participate in the daily activities at the Centre for Palaeogenetics and interact with researchers from the different groups.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for someone with a master's degree in a relevant area e.g. archaeometry, zoology, ecology, population genetcis. The candidate should have documented experience of laboratory work with ancient DNA and high-throughput sequencing. The Centre for Paleogenetics is a large facility with different research interests, which is why a demonstrated track-record of working in a similar laboratory facility will be considered a merit. Because the position involves integration with several research groups, good collaborative and analytical skills, ability to work independently and take own initiatives, well-developed sense of responsibility and service mindedness, well-developed ability of oral and written communication in Swedish and English are also considered as merits.
