The Department of Environmental Science (ACES) at Stockholm University is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Science. The department is divided into four units with more than 190 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. The department has a strong focus on research, spanning from couplings between climate change and biogeochemical cycles (atmosphere-land-ocean) to the sources, transport and effects of environmental contaminants. At the Unit for Biogeochemistry we are studying many aspects of the composition and functioning of the Earth system and large-scale biogeochemical cycles, and how these are affected by and feed back on anthropogenic perturbations such as climate warming. Two of our prioritized research areas are (i) how thawing land and subsea permafrost systems in the Arctic affects large-scale carbon cycling, including triggering release of various greenhouse gases, and (ii) how air pollution particularly in South Asia affects the gas and aerosol composition of the atmosphere, and how it affects the climate.  

We analyse specific molecules (i.e., gases and molecular markers), major and minor elements. We develop and apply isotope techniques: various isotope ratios and compound-specific isotope fingerprints of gases, aerosol components, and organic matter fractions in matrices such as air, seawater, sediments and soil, along with many other geochemical and geophysical system parameters.

The Unit for Biogeochemistry is now recruiting a Research Engineer to join our team of research engineers, faculty. post-docs and PhD students, to function as support to ongoing externally-funded research activities, become our lead manager for field observations and contribute to our molecular-isotope analytical competence.

Main responsibilities
The new colleague will be part of a team of several research engineers that works tightly with research group leaders, post-docs and PhD students. We do not expect anyone to cover all tasks listed below. Specific tasks and responsibilities will be divided within the tech group and the research group, and will depend on the particular skills and match of the incoming new colleague. This position is likely to include a combination of these key tasks:

Installation, operation and maintenance of both permanent facility/infrastructure and instruments used both continuously at remote atmospheric observatories and for specific field campaigns in both our atmospheric and Arctic research tracks. Instruments include those used for gases (e.g., Picarro cavity ring-down laser spectroscopy, Horiba CO monitors and gas chromatography) and for aerosol chemistry and physics (e.g., aethalometers, nephelometers, DMPS and Digitel high-volume filtration systems). This also includes programming of dataloggers, instrument calibration, efficient data management and quality assurance. The incoming candidate is likely to also contribute to university laboratory preconcentration systems, GCirMS and other instruments.

Management of the logistics in day-to-day operations, preparations for and execution of field campaigns. This includes shipping and receiving, securing permits, keeping close contact with local observatory colleagues. Coordinate and participate in field campaigns at our atmospheric observatories and at sea; analyse samples in our university laboratories.

Introduce and mentor Master students, PhD students, postdocs and guest researchers to laboratory protocols and field operations, including our safety routines. Master and document our methods for measurement, data processing and database management to ensure continuity, and to serve as a knowledge-bridge to new team members. Contribute to development of methods and research projects.

Participate actively in development and maintenance of a sound work environment.

Qualification requirements
M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree with focus on chemical-instrumental analysis, field instrumentation or corresponding competence.

Experience of a combination of high-precision measurements of atmospheric gases using laser (isotope) spectroscopy (e.g. Picarro instruments), online aerosol instrumentation, and/or GCirMS (e.g., Thermo Fisher Delta V) as well as maintenance and troubleshooting of state-of-the-art analytical instruments.

Knowledge of data handling and solid coding skills (e.g. in Python, R and/or MatLab).

Experience with field sampling/campaigns. Hands-on basic mechanical and electrical engineering skills are beneficial.

Good organizational skills and high social competence. Fluency in English (in speaking and in writing) is a requirement; basic knowledge of Swedish is an advantage (can be developed in an early phase of the employment).

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, indefinite-term position with a six-month trial period. Salaries at Stockholm University are determined individually; therefore, please indicate your requested salary. Start date immediately.
