Offer Description

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

In our research group, you will find a unique opportunity to work closely with top researchers in the borderland between psychology, neuroscience, and medicine to jointly try to understand how we can understand the human sense of smell. We offer an engaging and international research environment where you get an opportunity to contribute to high-quality research at an international top level.

Your mission

We are looking for an analytical person who has a strong interest in research and improving our understanding of how the human sense of smell works. The position as a research engineer will be within a larger project that attempts to link the perception of odors to brain processing through the use of a range of different methods, including electrophysiological measures (EEG), functional and structural brain imaging, as well as behavioral and psychophysical measurements. In your role as a research engineer in the group, you will participate in a subproject that attempts to determine how our olfactory receptors process odors through electrophysiological measurements and stimulations. The research group has developed a new method that allow measurements from our olfactory mucosa, where the olfactory receptors reside, in healthy individuals. The position is linked to Johan Lundström's research group (see link below) at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Division of Psychology, Karolinska Institutet. The employment is full-time for 12 months. You will mainly work with:

  • Measuring responses from the human olfactory epithelium during exposure to odors
  • Develop analysis of the obtained electrophysiological data collected
  • Using these analyzes to understand the human sense of smell

Your profile

A Master's degree in the engineering sciences is a requirement. For this specific demand, we accept master's level engineering degrees in a broader sense, and not only classical inginering degrees. Documented experience in the analysis of electrophysiological data as well as active nerve stimulation is of great importance. We also emphasize that the applicant has very good analytical skills and good knowledge of programming. Furthermore, we attach great importance to personal suitability. Very good English skills, both written and spoken is a requirement.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision is to pursue the development of knowledge about life and to promote a better health for all. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several good benefits through our collective agreement. And you get to practice freely in our modern wellness facilities, where trained staff are on site.

Location: Solna
